LOST OVERBOARD
BUTCHER REPORTED MISSING [Pm Unitbd Press Association.] WELLINGTON, October .2. On her run down from Auckland_ to Wellington the New Zealand Shipping Company’s steamer Rotorua lost her butcher overboard at 8 a.in. to-day. When the vessel was off Castlepoint the ship's butcher, G. Cook, was reported missing. A thorough search of the vessel failed to reveal the missing man, and at 8.25 a.m. the master, Captain C. B. Lamb, put the Rotorua about and for two hours steamed slowly back over the course in search of Cook. At 10.20, when the search had proved unsuccessful, the Rotorua was once more put on her course for Wellington ana arrived shortly after 6 p.m. There was only a moderate sea running, with a fresh north-westerly breeze, when Cook was reported missing, and it is stated he had been somewhat strange in his manner for some days past.
