SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHERS

ANNUAL MEETING OF DIOCESAN ASSOCIATION

At the annual meeting of the Diocesan Sunday School Teachers’ Association, held in the Cathedral crypt last Tuesday evening, Bishop Eitchett presided over a fair attendance of clergy and teachers.

The annual report stated that at the annual examination held in November last 103 candidates passed the examination—27 first class honours, 46 second class honours, and 30 passes, the percentage of first, class honours being higher than for the past few years. The teachers’ festival, held on December 7 at Mount Lodge, - thanks to the kindness of Mrs W. F. Edmond, though not so well attended as usual, was a very enjoyable function. The combined picnic was again held at Outran), when a happy day was spent by those present, nine parishes being well represented.

The election of officers resulted as follows: —President, the Rev. W. A. Hamblett; vice-presidents Dean Cruickshank, the Rev. L. D. C. Groves and the Rev. A. B. Pywell; bon. secretary and treasurer, Miss E. M. Blyth; hon. auditor, Mr E. Bond. After discussion a committee consisting of the president and vice-presidents was appointed to compile the syllabus for 1937. The Rev. W. A. Hamblett said he wished to stress the importance of tho work of the Sunday schools, especially in these difficult times. He knew that Sunday school teaching was a difficult task and often disheartening, but it was thoroughly worth while, and he urged the teachers to give more time and consideration to their Sunday school work, for only by being well prepared themselves could they expect to get and hold the interest of the children.

A motion was passed that the combined picnic be not held this summer, and that the various Sunday, schools be asked to arrange their own picnics; but that the matter of having a combined picnic be brought up before the meeting next year. It was decided to hold the teachers’ festival on the first Saturday in December, and that it be an afternoon function.
