COURSING
NOTES AND COMMENTS v NORTH OTAGO CLUB'S MEETING [By Plumptox.] TJio North Otago Coursing Club held its final meeting for the 193 G season, when n, novice stake was decided, the winner of which holds the O’Dell-Wise Challenge Cup. The stake drew an entry of 12 dogs, three of these being from Mrs G. Smart’s kennels. All three won in the first round, these being Desert Chimes, Desert Storm, and Sandy Desert. They are by Desert Blue from Chiming Bells. Sandy Desert was the only one to suffer defeat, this being in the second round, when he was opposed to Dad’s Worry, who won by four points to one, Dad’s Worry being beaten in the semi-final by Desert Chimes, the judge’s points being three to two and a-half. Both Desert ' Chimes and Desert Storm reached the final, with the result that the stake Was divided (as in accordance with rule 42).
Mrs Smart is to be congratulated in having turned out her dogs in such wonderful racing condition. Desert Chimes is an exceptionally fast pup. He had no difficulty whatever in leading all his opponents. AVhen finished growing this pup should win in the best of company. Desert Storm also led up in his courses, but is not as fast as his brother, although on the day he was superior to Desert Chimes when working the game. AVith these dogs in her kennels Mrs Smart should be well to the fore in the early part of next season. Mr 0. R. AVise occupied the judge’s box, and Mr F. Mitchell carried out the duties of slipper. The hares, as is usual with this club, were in the very best of racing condition, and in the 17 courses run during the afternoon not one looked like being caught. It was fitting that on this occasion Mr and Mrs G. Smart (owner of the winners) should have arranged to entertain visiting owners and coursing enthusiasts at their home. They were ably assisted in making a most enjoyable evening by Mr and Mrs llangi, Mr J. Benson, and Master Benson, who provided the musical entertainments. Notes. Miss Currie’s Dad’s Worry (AVhy AA’orry—Gay Parade), although not in the best of racing condition, went three very nice courses, and though he was led up by four lengths in the semifinal lie worked very nicely once the game was turned, and appeared to be unlucky in not receiving the flag.- Next season should find this dog winning big money if handled properly during the off season, and produced in the form in which trainer usually produces his dogs. Miss A. Smart’s Reflection (Direct Action—Carillon) has improved wonderfully well during the last six weeks. His working of the hare in the first round was most clever. He also worked well in his second course, but his luck was out, Desert Chimes evidently being given a full ipargin of points for his lead up. Mrs J. E. Smart’s Sly Terms (Lucky Terms—Sly Zella) went a good course in the first round, but was well beaten in the second round by Desert Storm. This dog looks well, arid if trained along proper lines next season may prove a hard dog to beat.
Mrs R. Hewitt’s Beautiful Pearl (Realm —Brown Pearl), although a good looker, raced very sluggishly, but she was a little on the big side to give of her best at this meeting. Miss M. Gordon’s Serenade (Even Lad—Sly Zella) raced very disappointingly at this fixture, but when properly set up and with a little education it would not be surprising to see this dog race well.
Mrs T. H. Hammond’s two candidates, AVonder AVhy and Gamble, from AVhy AA r orry—Gay Parade, both raced below expectations. As yet they are not near being fully developed. They should be much improved when the 1937 season commences.
Mr J. Robertson’s Black Link (Silver Streak—Little May) was not in the best of form. He was lifting very high in the hindquarters. AVith more elucation on the plumpton he may race much better.
Miss M. Macpherson’s Biddy Murphy (AVhy AVorry—Sultana) did not live up to her reputation. This is the bitch that in a trial some weeks back went a wonderful course. However, she is young yet, anl next season should find her racing in big company. Air K. J. Wing’s Full joy, who put up such a wonderful course in the first round of the Physic Cup Stake, decided at the AA’airarapa Club’s meeting, is by Why AVorry from Gay Parade, AA r hy Hurry, who was runner-up in this stake, is a litter brother. Both these dogs have performed consistently in the AVairnrapa district during the last two seasons.
