AUSTRALIAN SWIMMERS

ARRANGEMENTS FDR TOUR OTAGO CENTRE NEGOTIATIONS Further arrangements in connection with the tour of the South Island, under the auspices of the Otago Swimming Centre, of an Australian team were made at last night’s meeting of the centre, which was attended by the president (Mr W. A. Jenkins), Messrs J. M'Taggart, AV. Williams, S. Brown, D. C. Bannatvnc, P. AV. Harkess, D. T. AVoodfield’ A. Findlay, D. Thomson, B. Kerr, C. J. Leeden, E. Sonntag, and E. C. Isaacs (lion, secretary) . A letter was received from Mr Dudley Hellmrich, of the New South AA’ales Amateur Swimming Association, stating that the invitation to Messrs AV. Fleming, A. O’Connor, and himself had come to hand, and lie immediately cabled the secretary of the New Zealand Council accepting and stating that they would be ready to leave by the AA’anganella on November 14. He had had a letter from Fleming and he was delighted that everything had been completed. He had been training hard for several weeks past and added that he should be in good fettle when he landed in Dunedin. Mr Hellmrich said he had had Arthur O’Connor every week for the past six at the Tattersall’s Club heated indoor poo] practising, and he was confident that O’Connor would he right at his top when they land in Now Zealand. Personally, he was delving into all sorts of corners for information which might interest the clubs and officials. He was looking forward with much pleasure to meeting the officials and coaches in conference, for by an exchange of views he thought thev could all benefit.

The Teniuka Club and the Southland Centre each wrote accepting the, centre’s terms for an appearance by the Australian team, and a letter was received from the secretary of the Balelutlin Club stating that liis club would probably agree to an appearance and that a meeting to decide the question would be held on Monday next. The treasurer was instructed to get in touch with the Balelutha Club concerning the date of the appearance, and ho was also instructed to arrange for an appearance of the Australians at Alexandra on a Saturday.

Tho Lawrence Club advised that it ivas unable to take an appearance, and the secretary reportfd lliat replies had

not yet been received from the Canterbury and Ashburton centres and the AVestport and Roxburgh clubs. It was also reported that the Nelson Centre had also been written to and offered an appearance if it were possible to fit it in. but no reply had yet been received

With a view to completing the arrangements for the tour of the Australian team at an early date, a sub-com-mittee was appointed consisting of Messrs D. T. Woodfield (convener), I). Thomson, C. J. Leeden, and AV. A. Jenkins to collect guarantees, and it was also decided to approach the New Zealand Council asking if it would be prepared to assist in the completion of the arrangements. The Lawrence Chib wrote stating that it intended holding a “ Learn to Swim Week ” in December, and asking if the services of the centre’s educational officer (Mr D. C. Bannatyne) would be available. Mr Bannatyne intimated that he would be available, and it was decided to advise the Lawrence Chib accordingly. Tt was decided to recommend the incoming committee to hold a carnival on the evening of Labour Day (October 26) at which it was proposed to invite L. Newell (of Canterbury), the holder of the New Zealand 440yds, 880yds, and one mile championships, to compete. It was also resolved to recommend the incoming committee to hold “ Learn to Swim Week ” from November 21 to November 26, and to invite the sailors of H.M.S. Achilles to compete at a carnival to lie staged during their stay in Dunedin.
