SOUTH ISLAND CYCLING CHAMPIONSHIP

One of the most popular amateur cycling events in the Dominion is the Round the Gorges Hoad Race, held annually by the Papanui Cycling Club, and with this race, which will bo held on Saturday, October 17, goes the South Island 100 miles amateur cycling championship. The race starts from Papanui Memorial Square at 9.45 a.m., and finishes at the Metropolitan Trotting Grounds, Addington. _lt is expected that several Otago riders will be competing in this race, for which entries close on Wednesday next with R. Hill, 117 Woodham road, Avonside, or care of Box 204, Christ church. The prize list is a most attractive one, first prize being a radio valued at £2l; second, a canteen of cutlery worth £10; third, a gold wristlet watch worth £7; fourth, a mantel clock (£3 10s);
fifth, a wristlet watch (£2 10s); sixth, a casserole dish (£2 ss); seventh, a pair of military brushes (£1 17s 6d); eighth and ninth, pocket wallets; tenth, eleventh, and twelfth, medals. For fastest time there will be a silver tea service and tray, valued at £7 15s, and championship riband and medallion ; second fastest time, a pocket watch, valued at £3 17s 6d; third fastest time, a dressing case, valued at £2 10s; fastest time under 18 on day of race, a cup valued at 255. and championship riband and medallion; seoend fastest time under 18, set of carvers valued at £1 2s 6d; youngest competitor to finish within time and one hour of the fastest time registered who has not previously won a prize of any description, cup; similar trophies to the oldest competitor and the first competitor to finish who has not previously won a prize of any description; first Papanui Club member to finish within time limit who has not previously competed in a 100 miles event_ and has not received any other prize, cup; similar trophy to second Papanui member not receiving any other prize; youngest first season competitor to finish within one hour of fastest time registered, challenge cup and medal; first Yaldhurst Club member to finish within time limit, trophy given by Yaldhurst Club; first Lyttelton rider to finish within time limit, trophy. For the teams’ race for tin/ Hart Challenge Gup, the four riders of the club gaining the lowest points secure the trophy. Certificates are to be issued to all competitors who complete the course, the time limit to be on the basis of time and one-eighth of the fastest time registered.
