SOUTHERN FREEZING WORKERS
FORMATION OF ISLAND UNION ~ OBJECTIONS FROM OTAGO [Pee United Puess Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, September 30. It was announced by the secretary if the Canterbury Freezing Workers’ Jnion (Air J. Kirkpatrick) that the iiuister of Labour -(Mr Armstrong) lad given an assurance that a ballot .vould bo taken at the beginning of .he coming season to settle the question of the method of organisation and ■ontrol to be adopted in the South stand for the future.
Mr Kirkpatrick said that some time igo the South Island freezing workers ind related trades associations took a “straw” vote of the workers ■ from Picton to Bluff and secured an overwhelming vote for a formation of a South Island union. However, as a result of the objections lodged by the old Otago Union the registration was not granted. As a result of the representations made to him, the Minister of Labour had given the assurance that, to settle the matter, a ballot would bo taken at the beginning of the coming season. Provision for such a ballot was being made in the new legislation.
