BURNSIDE STOCK SALES
DECLINE IN FAT CATTLE VALUES Consequent on the representation of a generally poorer class of entry in the fat cattle pens, market values at Burnside to-day dropped on the average 20s for bullocks and from 10s to 15s for cows and heifers. Eight spring lambs—the largest number forward this season to date—averaged from 25s to 275. Improved prices for fat sheep were' being obtained at the start of the sale, and it was anticipated that opening rates would be maintained throughout.
While there were only a few prime heavy bullocks included in the yarding of 262 head of fat cattle,- there was a big percentage, of good medium weights and a number of unfinished sorts. Cows and heifers made up a small entry, and only a very few of these were of the best, the majority being plain, with a drift to light and weedy sorts. The sale was inclined to drag from the start, when values were fully 20s a head lower for bullocks and about 10s a head for cows and heifers. There was a further slight drop as the sale went on) hut this was only temporary. £l7 7? 6d was the top price paid, this being obtained for Messrs Hastings Brothers’, Stirling, draft, while other good lots from the same district sold from £ls to £l6 10s.

The number of fat sheep entered showed a decrease compared with last week’s total, there being only about 1,600 forward. \ The quality was also much below the standard set a week ago. Wethers were not so prominent as previously, and the general quality was' not attractive, as there was, only a small number of prime heavy-weights, a majority of medium grades, and a tailing of light-woolled\ stuff. The latter were only suitable xor graziers. The number of specially good ewes was also small, and in this section the majority was again comprised of medium sorts. A sprinkling of lights made, up the remainder of the entry. An improvement was seen in the class of hoggets yarded, some of these being up to show standard. Several country butchers were present, and graziers were also attending the sale, which, it was thought, would he a satisfactory one. The opening prices were from Is to 2s a head abofe last week’s rates. Several pens of two and three-year-old steers in forward condition were included in the medium-sized yarding of store cattle. Competition was again very keen, and prices generally were better than last week. Values were:— Best three-year-old steers, £7 11s to £10; two-year-olds, £5 10s to £6 los; heifers, £3 5s to £4 15s. A poor entry of boner cows sold at recent prices. Of the 128 fat pigs yarded, baconers brought from £3 Is to £4 10s, or about 6sd lb, while porkers sold from £1 10s to £3 Is, or 7d lb. There were also 133 stores in the penning.
