BLOWN TO PIECES
TRAGIC DEATH OF TUNNEL WORKER . [Per ’ United Press Association.] HOKITIKA, September 28. Robert Thompson Gallon, a married, man, with two children, was blown _ to pieces this morning by an explosion in his tent. Gallon, who was aged 39, was working in a tunnel. He started his shift at midnight with a mate, and after visiting the crib at 5 a.m.,thc latter entered the tunnel, expecting Gallon to follow in a quarter of_ an hour. Instead he heard an explosion that shook the tunnel. He found the crib tent, which. contained 121 b of dynamite aiid a dozen detonators, demolished, tram rails and earth broken, and the body of the deceased terribly mutilated. The deceased’s mate cannot account for the explosion, as the usual course followed was nob to prepare a, charge until 7.30, shortly before the shift ended, when a special visit was made to the tent to collect the explosives. Gallon was an exceedingly careful man in this respect. An inquest was opened and adjourned.
