ST. KILDA ESTIMATES
COUNCIL'S ADHERENCE NECESSARY FORTNIGHTLY MEETING Attention was drawn at last night’s fortnightly meeting of the St. Kilda Borough Council to the necessity of adhering strictly to the estimates. Tho chairman of the Finance Committee (Or N. D. Anderson) stated that during the next two or three weeks the council would bo called upon to spend approximately £2,000. This sum would be made up largely of the hospital levy of £843, Fire Board levy £lsl, loan payments £l6B, and bitumen account £BOO. He therefore advised that the estimates be adhered to. Rate collections to date were £3OO ahead of those collected by this time last year. Others present were tho mayor (Mr J. J. Marlow), Crs G. Glue, W. J. Davidson, J, H. Hinton, R. S. Brent, T. D. B. Roy, J. Cherry, W. Lovell. J. A. Carman. STREET LIGHTING CHARGE. Following upon the representations by a deputation from the St. Kilda Council to the City Council’s Electric Power and Light Committee on the subject of the charge for street lighting within the borough, the Town Clerk advised by letter that the City Council had decided to reduce tho present charge to £3 a lamp per annum on condition that the St. Kilda Council undertook to provide and maintain sufficient new street lights so that the total sum payable to the council per annum should be not less than the total now payable. It was decided to install 12 new lights and to advise the town clerk as soon as tho positions of the lights had been determined. DEFECTIVE FIRE PLUGS. Tho Superintendent of the Dunedin Metropolitan Fire Brigade wrote advising that an inspection of the fire plugs in tho borough was being carried out, and up to date defects had been revealed in 28 plugs. It was asked that these be rectified as early as possible. It was decided to ask the plumber to exercise more care in connection with the plugs in the future. REPORTS. The foreman’s report covered the work done since the last meeting, and suggested for the ensuing fortnight the reconstruction and sealing of Moreau street. It was suggested that if the weather was too wet for road work the improving of the footpaths be continued.—Adopted. Fifteen water bursts had been repaired, stated the plumber’s report, while eye bolts for water main valves had been made. Borough inspections had been carried out daily.—Adopted. GENERAL. Tho Director-general of the Health Stamp campaign wrote asking the council to assist the work by purchasing the stamps.—lt was de'cided to purchase a month’s supply of stamps and to authorise the holding of a street day in the borough. Accounts amounting to £520 wore passed for payment. Three applications for different street lights were referred to a sub-committee specially set up for tho purpose. A total of 3,842,000 gallons of water was consumed in the last fortnight, at a cost of £96 Is, as compared with £97 2s for tho previous period..
