CARISBROOK CLUB ANNUAL MEETING The annual meeting of the Carisbrook Cricket Club was held in the University Club rooms last night. There was a good attendance of members, presided over by Mr J. Hope (vicepresident). ANNUAL REPORT. The annual report stated that thanks were due to the O.R.F.U. for the facilities provided at the Carisbrook Grounds. The club had over 90 active members at the end of the season. For the first time for several years seven teams were entered in the O.C.A. grade competitions, while seven men were regular members of the oolts team and others played for this team at odd times. Unfortunately the services of several players were lost owing to their being transferred from Dunedin, and this, coupled with, the usual vacancies caused through players being away on leave, resulted in occasional difficulties in fielding full teams. It was thus impossible to keep the personnel of the junior teams tho same for successive matches, and the members of these teams are to be commended for their performances under these circumstances. The weather conditions throughout the season were atrocious, both for matches and practice, and the sustained interest in tho club and the game throughout tho season speaks volumes for the keenness of the members. The first eleven was third and the second eleven was runner up ip their respective grades, while' tho colts team, which was largely composed of Carisbrook men, finished second in the senior competition. In addition, the third grade competition was won by one of the club’s teams, which shows that the playing strength is well sustained. V. Marshall was congratulated on scoring two centuries during the season —112 and 127 not out, and also on being the only member of the club to obtain the three figures, although P. B. Kerr scored 99 for the first eleven against Dunedin. Mr Cavanagh was congratulated on being chosen to captain the Otago Plunket Shield team, and Messrs Dunning, Kerr, and Saxton on being members of this team. Mr D. A. R. Moloney, an old member of the club, was also congratulated on his inclusion in the New Zealand team which played against the M.C.C. touring team last season. Owing to the need for extra gear for an additional team, expenditure on material was very large. Unfortunately there were a large number of bats broken, but as the lasting properties of a bat are always an unknown quantity, and as the _club has been more than fortunate in this respect during the last few seasons, such a result was to be expected sooner or later. Owing to the wet weather the usual number of balls was not used, and several boxes of new balls are still in stock. The club was well equipped for bags, and further expenditure on these should not be incurred for some time. The committee was indebted to those members who so freely gave their services in coaching the junior members. An effort was made during the season to establish regular fielding practices, and, although handicapped by unsettled weather, the practices held were responsible for a great deal of improvement in this department of the game. The committee, on behalf of the club, thanked tho O.C.A. for the benefits rendered to the club and Otago cricket by its making available the services of the coach, F. T. Badcock. Last season resulted in an exceptionally large drop in the gate takings and tea money, and had it not been for the generosity of the president, vice-presi-dents, and older members a rather large deficit would have been incurred. The thanks of the club were due to these gentlemen for their support. Mr D. S. Cameron, a former club captain of the club, generously donated a trophy to be awarded to that team of the club which gave the best performance eacli year. The trophy had been awarded to tho third grade A team for last season. During the year the club lost a good friend and a keen supporter through the death of Mr Donald Stuart. Moving the adoption of the annual report, tne Chairman congratulated the club on reaching its sixty-fourth annual meeting. The three main items in the report were the all-round improvement in the teams, tho compilation of two centuries by a junior player, and, finally, tho satisfactory state of the finances. Congratulations were extended to the Albion Club on winning the competition. (Applause.) It was the oldest club in Dunedin, and always played a good game. The speaker referred to the loss suffered by the Albion Club through the death of Mr J. J. Clark. It was pleasant to notice the number of promising young players, and it was evident that the club had nothing to fear for the future. The chairman was glad to see the increase in the membership, and expressed the hope that all would put their shoulders to the wheel in the coming season. The club had seven teams in the field last year, and all performed well. In conclusion, tho Otago Rugby Football Union was thanked for the treatment of tho club in the past. The motion was seconded by Mr G. G. Austin, who expressed the disappointment of the players at the wet weather during the season, but the batting averages were very satisfactory. He stressed tbe need for care in the use of the club material, and suggested that some of the younger players be coached in bowling. The report and balance sheet were adopted. ELECTION OF OFFICERS. TEAM The Marylebone Cricket Club touring team, which will attempt to regain the ashes from Australia this _ season, will be the strongest side which England can put into the field, according to Mr A. Waddington, a former English professional cricketer and Marylebone Cricket Club player, who arrived at Auckland recently. Mr Waddington represented _ England _in two test matches against Australia in the 1920-21 season under the captaincy of J. W. H. T. Douglas, and intends to see the test matches in Australia this year. Batting and fielding seemed to him to be the strong points of the English side, though there was perhaps a weakness in the bowling. It was_ a very sporting side, under a sporting captain, and there was no reason why the tour should not be most successful. Hammond had struck his best form, and his batting would be a great asset to the side. Voce was as good as ever, and much was expected of the other fast bowler, Fames, who was a much younger man. Fishlock, the left-hand batsman, was considered by Mr Waddington, as a player likely to make a lot of runs.
