This interchange of visits doe's much to promote the spirit of fraternity and goodfellowship among brethren. The juvenile movement continues to make steady progress, and our appreciation and thanks are tended to those juvenile management committees who are giving such excellent voluntary service in the cause of the movement. The annual initiation competition was held at Dunedin on August 15, in the Loyal United Juvenile Lodge Room. Five lodges competed, including Oamaru and Toko., who displayed commendable enthusiasm and keenness in travelling so far to take part. First place was filled by Loyal Albion, with Loyal Oamaru second. The thanks of the council are extended to P.P.G.M. A. R.' Lawry for his services as judge. Albion also won the quoits competition. Shooting and badminton contests have yet to be decided. The initiation competition for city and suburban lodges was held on March 21, seven lodges competing. P.P.G.M. C. H. Russell judged the competition, which was won by the Loyal Caversham Lodge, Hand and Heart gaining second place. The southern area competition was held at Kaitangata on May 9, P.P.G.M. C. H. Russell acting as judge. Princess Elizabeth Lodge proved the winners. The following entries have been received for the Efficiency Shield Competition:—Hand and Heart, Dunedin, Prince of Wales, Albion, Oamaru, Roxburgh, Tapanui, Mount Wendon, Mosgiel, Caversham, Valley, Centenary, Middlemarch, Princess Mary, Star of the North.

The report was adopted. P.P.G.M.’s Bros. J. A. Robson and W. J. Johnston, who represented the district at the annual meeting of the Dominion Friendly Societies’ Council at Wellington on June 2, reported on business transacted at that conference, and were accorded a hearty vote of thanks. It was resolved that letters be sent to the hospital visitors expressing appreciation of their excellent services. Nominations were taken as follows: for P.G.M., P.D.G.M. H. Alpine; for P.D.G.M., P. Secretaries A. G. Monk, J. H. List, and P.G.’s A. Cameron, L. Hope, C. B. Barrowclough, and W. Sellar; auditor, P.G. C. Grater; lodgebook examiners—the present examiners were renominated; delegates to Dominion Friendly Societies’ Council —P.P.G.M.’s Stabb, Longworth, Johnston, Robson, and Sligo; Arbitration Committee—present committee, plus J. D. Cameron and W. J. Johnston; Otago Friendly Societies’ Council—Bros. J, Wilson, E. Longworth, J. H. G. Clark, J. A. Robson, C. L. Calvert, J. A. Miller, M. Isaac, W. H. Masters, E. L. Hope, and W, R. Sellar. ELECTIVE OFFICERS A remit from Loyal Centenary Lodge that district rule No. 5 be altered, deleting therefrom paragraph 5 and inserting in lieu thereof the following paragraph, was carried:—“ The method of polling for all elective officers in connection with the district shall be as follows: —The Prov.G.M. or chairman shall appoint scrutineers, who shall distribute to each deputy a voting paper provided for the purpose by the Prov. C.S. Each deputy shall write on his voting paper the name or names of the candidate or candidates for whom he wishes to vote. After the scrutineers have collected the voting papers they shall retire to, and ascertain in, some place appointed by the chairman, the number of votes cast for each candidate, and shall report to the chairman the number of votes obtained by each candidate. The candidate or candidates receiving an absolute majority of the valid votes cast by the deputies present and actually voting shall be declared elected by the chairman, who shall report to the meeting the number of votes received by each candidate. Candidates shall retire during the election. ALLOWANCES The district officers submitted the following remit, which was carried:— “National Provident Fund Part. District rule 78. Rule No. 2: Delete clause (a) and substitute the following therefor:—* (a) A “ maternity allowance ” is an allowance in cash which is payable to the wife of a benefit member of any age upon her confinement, or to the widow of such a member confined of a posthumous child. The amount payable in respect of such births is £6, provided that, in the case pf the wife or widow of a person who became a member of the society on or after April 28, 1931, the amount payable in respect of births occurring on or before June 30, 1936, is £4. Claims for maternity allowance shall be made on form A.S.l’ Rule No. 2; Delete clause (c) and substitute the following therefor: —* (c) This allowance will not payable while a member is resident elsewhere than in New Zealand, or unless his wife is, at the time of her confinement, resident in New Zealand, or where the joint income of a member and his wife during the 12 months preceding the date of the birth of the child in respect of which claim for maternity allowance is made exceeded £300; provided that, in the case of a person who became a member on or after April 28, 1931, the allowance will not be payable where the aforesaid joint income exceeded £270, if the birth occurred on or before June 30, 1936.’ ” GENERAL. The appointment of the place, date, and time for holding the next purple lecture and past officers’ degree meeting was left in the hands of district officers to arrange. It was decided that the annual meeting of District Committee in March, 1937, be held in the Loyal Albion Lodge room. The rate of levies for the half-year was fixed at 3s. After discussion it was moved by Treasurer A. Sligo, and seconded by P.P.G.M. J. D. Cameron —“ That the universal ritual as received from the A.M.C. be adopted, and shall come into force on a date to be fixed by the district officers.” Thanks were expressed to Loyal Tuapeka Pioneer Lodge for its hospitality to delegates. P.G.M. Hey, on behalf of Tuapeka Lodge, made a presentation of a P.G.’s collar to, P.G. Bro. George Gare, who has held the position of warden for 13 years and rendered yeoman service to his lodge. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded the P.G.M. for his able conduct of the meeting. On Friday evening the delegates were the guests of the local lodge at a ball held in the Lawrence Town Hall, and on Saturday evening they were entertained at the pictures, a short social function being later held in the lodge hall. Visitors and local brethren attended divine service at the Anglican Church on Sunday morning, the Rev. James Simpson conducting the service. ‘ During the meeting greetings were received from P.S. Bro. Edmonds on behalf of the Southland district, and from P.P.G.M. Bro. A. A. Lawry. It was decided to send a cablegram to P.P.G.M. Bro. J. G. H. Clark, now on a holiday visit to the Old Country, extending fraternal greetings and best wishes. The chairman conveyed congratulations to P.P.G.M. Bro. R. S. Black on his recovery from his recent accident.
