GOVERNMENT POLICY.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—“ A ” again devotes much space to the league itself. Because we said this was irrelevant he now assumes that as his charge was “ not denied ” then it must be correct. For this reason alone we again deny, without any reservation whatever, that the league is at all desirous of dividing the people or preventing their unity. But how on earth this can affect the discussion is beyond our understanding. Our statement that there is no shortage of money in the world he labels as “ brazen auclacity,” and, to disprove our assertion, ho points out that some people are starving because they have not enough money. This does not disprove what wo said; it only shows that there is a faulty distribution of the money which exists in plenty. However, we do not propose to follow this up, because it also has nothing to do with the matter under discussion, even supposing all his assertions were true. Tho point is a. very simple one — namely, that it is useless to demand from politicians a result (such as abolition of poverty) unless it can _ be achieved. To demand an impossibility is futile. “A ” and his friends argue that the possibility of the demand does not matter at all. Wo say it is the acid test. To use more of your space over such a simple matter would be too much to ask. If “A ’’ and his ilk think the people of New Zealand will blindly support a demand without first knowing whether it is possible to grant it, then wo think they are misjudging them. The proposal is too silly.—We are, etc., Xkw Zealand Welfake League. Wellington, September 24.
