SUSTENANCE AND BUSINESS.

TO THE EDITOR Sir, —I would be pleased if you could enlighten me with regard to a man on sustenance who also carries on a small confectionery business, his 17s a week sustenance and profits from shop averaging 12s (id a week giving him less than 30s a week. I understood that a single man on sustenance was allowed to make up to £2 a week, including sustenance, without any cut being deducted. This man has now been informed without notice of any kind be will not renotice of any kind that he will not receive any further relief whatever while engaged in such business. The point I wish to stress is that ho must shut up his shop at once, without being jjiven a chance to dispose of his stock, if h.o is still to receive sustenance. Though the placement officer had nothing to offer him in the way of work, surely he was entitled to a few weeks’ notice of this change of conditions now in force.—l am, etc., Sustenance, September 26. P.S.—Since writing above I have wondered if this is a move to make a break in the 14 weeks preceding Christmas in order to qualify for the bonus, should one bo granted at that time— Sustenance. [Wo are advised that it "is contrary to the department’s policy to provide unemployment relief to persons who are engaged in competitive business.—Ed. E.S.]
