TELEPHONE TO LINER
SIXTY-SEVEN CALLS ON AWATEA'S FIRST ROUND TRIP [Special to the ‘ Staii.’] WELLINGTON, September 28. The new opportunity for radio communication between New Zealand telephone subscribers and passengers on the intercolonial liner Awatea has been a popular innovation. The total number of calls during the liner’s first round trip between New Zealand and Australia was 67. On the outward trip from Wellington to Sydney via Auckland there were 42 calls, and on tho return journey from Sydney to Auckland 25 conversations took place, of which 20 originated from the Awatea and five from New Zealand subscribers. In everv case speech was reported to be excellent. A great deal of interest was taken in this interesting development of telephony, and the Awatea’s radio operators would have been extremely busy on the liner’s last evening before reaching port but for tho fact that heavy southerly weather was encountered on rounding Cape Maria Van •Diemen, and the of many passengers -was thus considerably curtailed.
