ON FRINGE OF DRY AREA

HOTELS MENACE TO HUMAN LIFE MAGISTRATE'S COMMENT [Per United Press Association.] INVERCARGILL, September 28. “ It is not sole to drive on the North, road after (3 on any night, especially lor cyclists. It is my opinion that hotels’ on the outskirts of a city where there is No-licenso arc a menace to human life. This is an outstanding example of that. Men don’t go out there to have a drink; they go to fill up, as it were.” This comment was made by Mr B’reeman, S.M., during tho hearing of a charge against a taxi driver, James Douglas Scott, who pleaded guilty to being intoxicated while in charge of a car. Counsel said accused was suffering from influenza, and went to the hotel for a rum to try to shake it off. He had been driving for 12 years and had never had an accident. The Magistrate said if accused had been plying for hire ho would have imposed a term of imprisonment. Accused was fined £25 and his license was cancelled to tho end of the current term.
