NO MORE BULK WHISKY

SCOTLAND GUTS OUT N.Z. MARKET ADVERSE EXCHANGE DETERMINES ISSUE MORE ACCESSIBLE MARKET IN U.S. [Per United Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, September 26. It is only a matter of months before supplies of bulk whisky in New Zealand will be exhausted. Scottish firms have declined to send further shipments to New Zealand owing to the markets in America being easier of access and free from the exchange difficulty, which has been a source of annoyance. The big Scottish firms have been in the habit of carrying the adverse exchange themselves. The Scottish manufacturers had continued to supply the New Zealand market with bulk whisky and pay the exchange themselves in the hope of the Labour Government raising the exchange rate, said an importer, but their patience was now exhausted. Although they were also supplying case whisky at a loss, the market was too valuable to lose, and they were hanging on in the hope of the exchange being removed, or at least reduced, to a more favourable level. Bulk whisky had until lately been available, but at an exorbitant price. The price had increased by 150 per cent., and even then there had been difficulties in getting supplies. Now came the latest advice from Scotland that no more bulk whisky would be sent to New Zealand. The demand this year in America was confidently expected, to increase by 100 per cent. _ Thus manufacturers were.in a position to dictate their terms.
