BOY SCOUTS' ASSOCIATION
OPENING OF HOBBIES EXHIBITION A MOST IMPRESSIVE DISPLAY REMARKABLE ABILITY SHOWN Under the auspicies of the Dunedin Metropolitan district of the Boy Scouts’ Association, a and handicraft exhibition was opened in the Pioneer Hall last evening, which demonstrated to the full _ the excellence of the wide variety of interests which occupy the Boy Scouts in their leisure hours. The exhibits have been arranged In classes, for each of which a prize was awarded to encourage a spirit of friendly rivalry among the Scouts. The main hobby was modelling, in which a high degree of skill has been reached, particularly in one outstanding attraction, a group of 20 model aeroplanes. Yachts and motor boats figure prominently, with considerable skill and inventive ability being indicated in the Meccano submissions. The handicraft sections drew a large variety of articles, including small radio sets and transmitters, showing again much constructive skill. Working in wood, metal, and wool, basket work, painting, and drawing all have their devotees, while the team spirit is exemplified in the Scout camp and Maori par models, which are two of the most conspicuous features of the display. The sections which have been confined to entries by Cubs illustrate the many forms- in which the small boys’ passion for collecting may find expression. Stamps, of course, figure prominently, and there are also collections of cigarette cards and coins, while one boy has entered a box containing 166 1914 pennies, which, he states, are rarely found in circulation. The Cubs have contributed to the display a number of models and exhibits of handicraft, 'and, as in the case of the Scouts, they have forwarded large numbers of entries for the cooking Among the displays loaned by other organisations are two which must be appreciated by all boys. They are a display of model aeroplanes arranged by the Model Aeroplane Club, and a collection of models which are the work of members of the Otago Model Engineering Society. A display by the Dunedin Photographic Society is also included. OFFICIAL OPENING. The exhibition was officially opened by the mayor (the Rev. E. T. Cox) last night. The chair was occupied by the president of the Dunedin metropolitan district (Sir Percy Sargood), who said that never before had Dunedin been honoured by such a gathering of those at the head of the movement in New Zealand. He extended a hearty welcome to the Dominion Chief Commissioner’ (Dr Clennell Fenwick), the Deputy Dominion Commissioner (Colonel Cresswell), the _ Dominion Commissioner for Rovers (Air Marshal Sir Robert Clark-Hall), and the Dominion secretary (Major Fur by). Dr Fenwick read a letter from the Governor-General (Viscount Galway), who is the Dominion Chief Scout, extending his best wishes for the success of the exhibition, and congratulating those responsible for organising the display. Dr Fenwick added that he would nave pleasure in advising His Excellency that he had never seen a more wonderful exhibition of what Scouts could do. He expressed .his indebtedness to Sir Percy Sargood for his great service to the movement in Dunedin. Scouts would learn with pleasure, he added, that the World Chief Scout (Lord Baden-Powell) had fully recovered from the illness which he had suffered in South Africa. Dr Fenwick added that in four years New Zealand would celebrate its centenary, and he was going to seek permission to hold a huge jamboree, inviting Scouts from overseas. He congratulated the boys on the fine display which they had staged, and expressed the hope that they would never forget to be good Scouts. * NEW METROPOLITAN COMMISSIONER. The Chief Commissioner then 'introduced the new commissioner for the Dunedin Metropolitan District (Dr F. ■J. Borrie, formerly of Christchurch). He added that Mr C. H. Wing, who had been acting commissioner . for some months, had forwarded his resignation from office, but he would not be allowed to retire. Dr Fenwick then inducted Dr Borrie, with the appropriate Scout ceremony, into his new office, and called upon Mr Wing to act as assistant metropolitan commissioner. Dr Borrie acknowledged the responsibilities of his office, and expressed his determination to do all in his jiower to further the interests of the movement. Ho expressed the opinion that the Scous were justified in feeling great pride in the exhibition which they had staged. Sir Robert Clark-Hall also addressed the gathering briefly. He said that he was new to his office, but would try to learn all he could to equip himself for his position. Mr Wing, acknowledging appreciative reference to his services, thanked all the officers for their loyalty to him, and stressed the amount of time which they devoted to the service of the movement. Declaring the exhibition open, the Mayor said that the founder of the Boy Scout movement first became known to the Empire during the South African War through the relief of Mafeking, and he was, then knighted. But the work which he did in founding the Boy Scout movement had been regarded as even more valuable than that which he did as a soldier, and the King had honoured him with a peerage. It was a great and wonderful movement, spreading far and wide, and the exhibition indicated some of its activities. The ideals outlined by Dr Fenwick in inducting the new commissioner showed what the movement stood for in regard to moral character, and the exhibition showed what the minds and hands of the boys were doing. He then declared the display officially open.
During the evening camp fire items were given by the North Dunedin Scouts and Hovers and by the Sea Scouts.
