OBITUARY

MR JOHN CLEGG A widely-kn, .vn figure in the commercial life of Dunedin before his retirement, which was in later years spent in Nelson, passed away yesterday in the person of Mr John Clegg. Mr Clegg was born in ' lanchester, England, .on April 21, 1847, and was educated at Archbishop Holgate’s School in York. school was founded by Archbishop Holgate in the reign of Henry VIII. After spending some years in a merchant’s office in his native town, Mr Clegg sailed for New Zealand by the sailing vessel Drumclog, which arrived at Port Chalmers in June 1887, after an adventurous maiden voyage of 93 days. During that period the ship wa, nearly wrecked, and land was sighted only once. After 22 years of business lif , the greater portion being passed in Dunedin as an accountant and financial agent, Mr Clegg was able to retire. Of his leisure he devoted a large portion to foreign travel. During one of his voyage? the vessel by which he was travelling was captured early in the course of the Great War by a German cruiser, the Crown Prince William —a converted passenger steamer of 25,000 tons—off Pernambuco, in Brazil, and Mr Clegg was given 15 minutes to clear out and take up his abode on the Crown Prince as a prisoner of war. It was early in the war, and the prisoners were exceedingly well treated by the Germans. All his adventures during this trying time were described by nim at patriotic lectures, of which he g-.ve 60, with the result that a net profit of £1,140 was obtained for distribution amongst various war funds.
