MATUA MAKES PORT
SAILS RIGGED FROM DECK AWNINGS PROPELLER AND RUDDER DAMAGED [Per United Press Association.! AUCKLAND, September 25. Aided by two headsails made out of dock awnings and set on the foremast, the Union Company’s motor ship Matua, with her port propeller and rudder damaged, returned from Rarotonga to Auckland in_ nine days, arriving here this morning. Her average speed was between eight and nine knots. When the ship was Heaving Aitutaki about 8 p.m. on September 15 her port quarter struck submerged coral. The impact was so slight that few passengers noticed it. The ship returned to Rarotonga, leaving 10,000 cases of oranges at Atiu and Mauke, and left Rarotonga on September 16. A strong north-easterly gale was encountered yesterday, but the ship ran before it, carrying both sails. As part of her cargo 6,150 cases of oranges and 300 boxes or tomatoes were landed in perfect condition.
After discharge the ship is to dock for repairs.
