SQUASH RACKETS
NEW CLUB’S PROGRESS Excellent progress has been made with the construction of courts and club rooms for the newly-formed Otago Squash Rackets Club. The club has leased for a period of 10 years the third floor of a building in Dowling street owned by Hallenstein Bros. Ltd. and occupied for the most part by Messrs Gordon and Gotch Ltd. In the meantime two courts are being provided, and a third will be built when the demand warrants it. Hot showers and a drying room are being installed for the benefit of "playing members, and it is intended to equip another large room for pingpong and deck tennis. At the present time the club has a guaranteed membership of 111 and a waiting list of 17 prospective players. The bulk of the money required for building constructional purposes amounting to about £1,200 has been taken up in. debentures, while membership fees are expected to provide, at three guineas apiece, a sum of £315, and playing fees a further £2OO. Despite certain unforeseen expenditure in regard to building alterations, the club still requires only about £GO, it is estimated, to balance its budget for the first year’s operations. , The club’s committee is highly optimistic regarding the future of the game in Dunedin, and hopes to stage the Dominion championships on its court this year. The present champion of New Zealand is Dr W. Fca, the celebrated Otago Rugby player.
