SCARCITY OF FISH

HIGH PRICES m MARKET TAIERi MOUTH FISHERMAN'S BIG HAUL Fish merchants have never known tho trade to experience such a bad run as has been the case during the past month, a ‘ Star ’ reporter was told today. The market does not show any improvement whatever over the conditions prevailing last week. The demand by the fish merchants is very keen, but the supply is very poor. Prices ruling are about the same as last week. On the market yesterdav soles brought from 56s to 60s a benzine box, the usual price being about 30s. Groper brought 85s a case, the normal price being about 455. This fish, when cleaned and trimmed and placed in the window, costs 9d per lb. Flounders were os a dozen this morning, and the fisherman who caught this consignment received about £5 10s for his night’s catch, having struck a hare market. One Taiori Mouth fisherman on today’s market got about £24 for bis day’s catch and about £57 for the week, having also struck a bare market, although he had to work very hard for it, the sea being rather rough. Whitebait is still very scarce, a small consignment only coming from the Southland district, and returns are still very high. Crayfish, which is in perfect condition just now, is selling extremely well, the price being about the same, 18s to 20s a sack. Next week finishes tho oyster season.
