EMPIRE
Three of Hollywood’s best-known players, Clark Gable, Myrna Loy. and Jean Harlow', have the leading roles in ‘ Wife Versus Secretary,’ a delight-i fully amusing domestic comedy, which is the main attraction at the Empire this week. Flawless in story, flawless in performance, masterful in direction, dazzlingly beautiful in sotting, and smart in dialogue, the new picture is the latest artistic triumph for the producers of such all-star hits as ‘ Mutiny on the Bounty,’ ‘ China Seas,’ and) ‘ A Tale of Two Cities.’ Based on a story by Faith Baldwin, the film depicts the efforts of the beautiful wife of a wealthy business man to retain the affections of her husband in face of the opposition of his attractive secretary. For those who search for real modern entertainment this picture, it is said, can be recommended as something that should be seen. Gable in the polished role of Van Sanford 1 , a millionaire publisher, is as brilliant as ever and shows his versatility to audiences which have been used to seeing him in such vigorous parts as Fletcher Christian and Captain Gaskell, the latter part being taken in _ ‘ China Seas,’ when he was said to give the finest portrayal of his career. Clarence Brown, who directed ‘ Wife Versus Secretary,’ is the man who was responsible for the Greta Garbo attraction ‘ Anna Karenina ’ and the film version of Eugene O’Neill’s ‘ Ah, Wilderness.’, Myrna Boy, as the wife, gives another charming performance, and one which greatly enhances her already splendid reputation with filmgoers, while Jean Harlow, as the secretary, also gives an excellent portrayal.
