EXCITING CHASE
POLICE PURSUE CONVERTED GAR YOUTHS PRESENT REVOLVER [Pkk United Press Association.! AUCKLAND, September 25. Tbe story of two youths in a converted motor car chased by the police in the early morning of August 31 was told in the Police Court to-day. One boy is to be dealt with in the Children s Court and the other, William'Joseph Mirko (17), to-day pleaded guilty to charges of unlawfully converting two oars, stealing a rug and handbag, being in possession of a revolver, and inciting the other youth to commit an offence by attempting to discharge a firearm at Detective Brady. The evidence showed that police in a patrol car observed the erratic course of a car passing the Newton Police Station, ami gave lengthy chase,at a terrific speed. Reaching Avondale, one of the occupants presented a revolver at the police, but no shots were fired. The car pulled up off the metal, the two youths jumped a fence, and in an attempt to make them stop the police fired three shots. Later Mirko was found in Victoria road, and subsequently his companion was found at home. , The police said accused had admitted entering a nursing home the same night. The nurse sat up in bed and screamed, and he beat a hasty retreat. After hearing the plea by counsel, and questioning the probation _ officer, the magistrate (Mr Hunt) decided to place the accused on probation for three years. He said if he gave trouble he would get two or three years’ imprisonment.
