BRITISH SOLDIER KILLED REINFORCEMENTS REACH HAIFA Press. Association— By Telegraph—Copyright JERUSALEM, September 23. Lance-corporal Merry, of the York and Lancaster Regiment, was killed in a skirmish with an armed Arab band near Rama, Palestine, after reports were circulated that the Arab Higher Committee was preparing a proclamation declaring its determination to continue the strike. The first emergency reinforcements from England, numbering 1,400 men, reached Haifa at 5 o’clock this morning. An announcement regarding martial law is expected this week-end. ADVICE REJECTED STRIKE NOT CALLED OFF. JERUSALEM, September 23. The Arab Higher Committee rejected King Ibn Baud’s advice to call off the strike.
