FENCING SUGGESTED
RAILWAY ON MAIN STREET PALMERSTON NORTH FATALITY [Per United Press Association.] PALMERSTON N., September 24, Following comments made by • woman witness at the inquest on Mrs Jane Jackson, who died as the result of being struck by a train when attempting, to, cross the line in the mails street, hot at the recognised crossing, Mr A. H. Northover, appearing for the Railway Department, intimated that he would bring the question of fencing the line before the department. “ It is tcnible to live in' the main street,” declared Mrs Irwin, who was an eyewitness of the fatality. She said she had had many shocks_ since living there, and would shift if she could get another house. On one occasion she rushed out to a boy of 13 months, who was sitting on the line when the express was coming. Had his father not jumped the fence of his residence and rushed out 'the hoy might have been killed. Children did not know better. Shs had seen children playing on the lin«( and the engine whistling repeatedly to get them out of the way. Witness suggested fencing. The line is unfenced east of the post office in the main part of the city. The coroner gave a verdict of accidental death, and exonerated the driver.
