BERTHING DELAYED

LINER GETS IN SHALLGW WATER [Pee United Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, September 24; Rumours were current at LytteJtoit this morning that the liner Tamaroa grounded near the entrance to the moles' of the inner harbour. Neither; the owners’ representative (Captain A< J. Charman) nor the harbour master (Captain J, F.' Crawford} . would verify the report. The incident occurred at approximately 7-o’clock, and the vessel did not berth until 8 o’clock. Captain Crawford said the delay was occasioned by the Tamaroa “ smelling the bottom.” In plainer terms it meant that the vessel was in shallow water, and owing to the propellers setting up a strange motion the vessel had got into a position in which it was difficult to manoeuvre her.
