[From Our Correspondekt. j BALCLUTHA, September 23. PERSONAL. Prior to leaving Balclutha for new positions, Messrs A. V. AVoodhouso and A. Cooper, members of the local railway staff, were entertained at a farewell social by fellow-members and carters. The former was presented with a fireside chair, and the latter with two rugs. Eulogistic references were made to the esteem j’n which the departing railwayineu wore held by their colleagues. Mr AA r oodhotise left for Roxburgh to-day, after 11 years in Balchitha. and was the recipient of a fountain pen from the carters. Mr Cooper, who has been in Balclutha for 18 years, leaves for Tokomii towards the end of this week. LODGE INSTALLATIONS. The annual installation of officers of I Lodge Clutha, No. 14, Masonic, took ' place during the week-end, when the lit. AA r or. Prov. Grand Master of Otago. S. F. Bridgman, assisted by Grand Lodge officers, carried out tho ceremony, there being a large attendance of local and visiting brethren. Officers installed were:—AV.M., Bro. E. B. Lothian ; deputy-master, AA’or. Bro. P. Mason; 1.P.M., Bro. John Clark; S.AV., Bro. das. Gold; J.AV., Bro. D. H. Ballantyne; organist, Bro. J. H. Stevenson; chaplain, Bro. E. Barnett; secretary, Bro. A.P.M.’s jewel was presented to Wop. Bro. W. T. Campbell by the Prov. G.M., while Sec. Bro. AUNaughton was presented with a secretary’s jewel by AVor. Bro. P. Mason on behalf of the lodge members. After tho installation a banquet was held. About 40 members of Miriam, Ruth, and Linda 1.0.0. F. Lodges paid a visit to Princess Elizabeth Lodge during the week-end. and were entertained at a social evening on the Saturday night. On Sunday morning members of all lodges attended a church parade, and in tho afternoon were taken for a trip to Kaka Point. The weather was delightful, and all participating spent a very happy time. STIRLING DAIRY FACTORY. There was a good attendance at the fiftieth annual meeting of the Stirling Dairy Factory Company on Saturday night, Mr A. A. Jensen presiding. A motion of sympathy with the relatives of the late Mr Hone Anderson was carried in the usual way. The annual report showed that 9,218,7211 b of milk were received, this containing 353,753.831 bof cheese. The average test was 3.84, equivalent to 11b of butterfat ; 410 tons 16cwt loilb of cheese were manufactured, while 14,614 gallons of milk were separated into full milk butter. All cheese manufactured was finest and first grade. The pay-out for the season was Is o£d per lb butterfat. The balance sheet disclosed that £17,175 12s 8d had been paid out for milk, cheese, and butter requisites, £627_ 6s; cheese cases, £370 5s 8d; salaries and wages, £1,905 Is 8d; fuel, £165 2s sd; repairs and maintenance, £256 0s Hd; storage hud grading and harbour dues, £347 4s lOd; general expenses. £149 9s lid; printing, etc., £79 lls lOd; rates, interest, insurance, taxation, £166 7s Gel; directors’ and audit fees, £l5O los; railage, cartage, and wharfage on cheese, £570 lls 3d; power and light, £129 16s 9d; depreciation, £247 0s 10d; balance, £3,532 8s 3d; total, £25,872 15s 6d, Receipts: Balance brought forward, £2,168 19s 2d: cheese sold locally and on hand, £5.156 15s sd; cheese shipped and sold, £16,902 4s 2d; butter and cream sales, £1,154 Is; whey sales. £189; other receipts, £6l 15s 9d. The pigs account showed a credit of £37 3s 9d, after allowing for whey supplies, £lB9. The Chairman referred to the new system under which dairymen were now working, and expressed the opinion that tho guaranteed price would be satisfactory. Messrs' Jensen and AV. I. Mosley were re-elected to tho directorate, an cl it was decided to reduce the number of directors from nine to seven and not fill the vacancies caused by the resignation of Mr Jos. Smith (who had been on the board for 50 years) and l death of Mr H. Anderson. The directors’ recommendations that a 4 per cent, dividend be paid and that £l4O be transferred to renewals account were adopted. Mr Cooke was reappointed auditor, the directors’ fees were liked at £l5O, and votes of thanks were accorded the manager, staff, and directors. SPORT. At the annual mooting of the Kaitangata Cricket Club tho following office-bearers were elected :—President, Mr L. North; patron, Mr P. M'Skimming; vice-presidents—Messrs Owens, Aitkcn, Milne, Gallagher, Blackburn; secretary, Mr AV. A. Parker; committee—Messrs Smith, Leisbman, North, Garvin, Hampton, K. Blackburn, Crowe; delegates to 5.0.C.A., Messrs North and Hampton. It was decided to enter one team in the competitions. Opening day was fixed for October 3, and it was decided to invite tho Kaikorai team to visit Kaitangata on Labour Day. The balance sheet presented at the annual meeting of tho Kaitangata Tennis Club showed a credit of £l3 10s. Office-bearers elected were;— President, Mr C. Penman; secretary, Air H. Prydc; auditor, Mr T. Middlemass; club captain, Mr C. Penman; challenge secretary, Miss Myers. A large number of vice-presidents was elected. Opening day was fixed for October 10. An endeavour is to be made to secure a visit from the United Club, Dunedin, on Labour Day. Mr J. O’Fee, the retiring president, who has been a member for 25 years, and who resigned from the presidency, was elected the first life member of the club, and returned thanks for the honour conferred upon him. The annual meeting of the Balclutha Tennis Club was held last night, when Air E. Barnett presided over a good attendance. Reference was made to the death of Air S. V. AVhite, who had been patron for many years, and a motion of condolence was carried in the usual way. The annual report showed that the club had 48 members last season, a decrease of eight on the previous year. In the South Otago, competitions the B grade team had finished runners-up, while the A grade finished level with Milton, but tho competition was not finished owing to tho weather. The men’s singles was won by Air E. Botting, while Airs Moffat and Miss Edwards had still to play off in the ladies’ singles. The balance sheet showed a profit of £23 on the year’s working, but there was still a debit balance of £126 10s 3d. In moving the adoption the president said the question of top-dressing the courts would have to. bo' considered, but before this work was carried out something would have to be done in trying to reduce the debt. The following officers were elected for the coming season: —Patron, Air P. APSkimming; president, Mr E. Barnett; vice-presi-dent, Air AV. R. Scott; secretary, Air F. Gilligan; committee—Airs Les. Aloffat, Miss M. Edwards, and Air L. Bowcott; auditor, Air Jas. Guest; delegates to 5.0.L.T.A., Alessrs Barnett and Scott; Social Committee— Aire Aloffat, Alisses Edwards, I. Murray; and Al'Noe, with power to add. Reference was made by the president to the departure of th© secretary,. Mr D. Kaye, who had held the position for some five years, and he expressed the gratitude of members to Mr Kaye for the time and work lie had put in in the interests of the club. It was decided that the subscriptions bo the same as last year, but, instead of 6s rebate for prompt payment, the rebate be 2s Gd in order to help the funds. Opening day was i fixed for October 10. Several new members were nominated and elected, and the prospects are that the club will have an increased membership this season. The matter of top-dressing, estimated to cost over £6O, was left over for the committee to consider, and a successful meeting concluded with a vote of thanks to the chair. Mr A. K. Baxter presided over a fair attendance at the annual meeting of the Clutha Cricket Club to-nigbt. At embers stood in silence as a mark lof respect to the memory of Alessrs John Gold and S. A 7. AA r hite. The annual report stated that the A team had won the Stewart Shield and were runners up for the AVaiwera Cup, while the B team had done well and showed marked improvement. Alessrs A. Baxter, AV. Henderson, L. Guest, T. Gold, and A. Stewart gained rep. honours. In the A team AV. Henderson topped the batting average and L. Guest the bowling, while in tho B team J. AlTvor topped the batting and also the bowling. The balance sheet showed a debit balance of £l9 2s, compared with £l7 at the start of the season. The report and balance sheet were adopted, the president pointing out that their finances were much about the same as last year, despite the fact that £lO had been spent on a new mat. A vote of thanks was accorded the retiring secretary (Mr L. Guest). It was decided to write 4i letter of appreciation to Air AV. H. Henderson for services rendered. The matter of the number of teams to be entered in tho competitions was held over to the committee to decide. Several matters of a routine nature were discussed, and the meeting closed with a vote of thanks to the chair and to all who had assisted the club in any way during the past season. MAGISTRATE’S COURT. At the Balclutha Alagistratc’s Court to-day, AVililam Reynolds, _of Christchurch, was proceeded against for illegally being in possession of opossum sldns, and also with illegally taking and killing opossums in Otanomomo Bush in May, 1934. Tho Police said tliat the defendant was one of four caught taking opossums on tho date mentioned, but when the informations were served no trace of him could he found. Ho had been apprehended in Dunedin last week, when he returned from Alanapouri, where ho had been trapping under the name of Reginald Blackwell. After the magistrate had heard the evidence of AV. H. North and Constable Boyle, the defendant was fined £l2, with 24s costs, and was given time to pay at tho rate of £5 a month. Rubina S. APCormack was charged with keeping her shop open for trading on Sunday. Hi's AVorship said he would convict the defendant and adjourn the case for six months. If the report were satisfactory at the end of that period there would be no further penalty,
