LABOUR NIGHT CARNIVAL NATIONAL CHAMPION MAY APPEAR The Otago Centro of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association met last night, there being present Messrs D. C. Bannatyno (in the chair). 1). Thomson, 1). T. Woodfiold, J. M'Taggart, I'. E. L. Forrester, 14. Sonntag, E. FI.. James, W. Stewart, C. J. Leeden, and E. C. Isaacs (lion, secretary) . The Secretary reported that the Nawi Kira Shield and an autographed photograph of Miss Nawi Kira had been received from Mr J. Windeler, of Rotorua, and ho sought approval for the centre’s minute of appreciation to be drawn up in suitable manner and signed by all the members. It was left to Mr .James to deal with the matter and report to the next meeting. Several letters dealing with the tour of the South Island by the Australian swimmers were received, and these were referred to the Tours Gub-cornmittee. Mrs J. M'Taggart, convenor of the centre’s Ladies’ Committee, wrote suggesting the centre should hold a sale of work in the club rooms at tho end of November, the proposal being made with a view to raising funds in connection with the centre’s street day on January 29.—Tho sugestion was agreed to, Mrs M'Taggart being thanked, and it was decided to appeal to the clubs for gifts. The centre’s delegate on tho New Zealand Council (Mr A. T. F. Stokes) wrote stating that L. Newell, New Zealand 440yds, 880yds, and one-mile champion, would bo willing to come from Christchurch to compete at the centre’s carnival on Labour Day. Mr Stokes, who is a former New Zealand champion, stated that he would be in Dunedin at the time, and would be willing to compete in a 440yds event with Newell. 1 The secretary was instructed to write to_Mr Stokes stating that it was definitely interested in the proposal, and that the arrangements would bo completed at the centre’s annual meeting on, October 11. Mr E. 11. James reported on the conference that had been held between the centre’s representative and members of the City Council’s General Committee concerning the proposal that a new swimming pool of Olympic standard should bo -built in Dunedin. The committee had received the centre’s representatives most sympathetically, the proposals had been fully discussed, and the committee had promised to investigate thoroughly the whole matter. —Mr James was Sianfied for his report. The Secretary of the Moeraki Centenary Executive Committee wrote seeld ing the support of the centre in arranging a swimming carnival and demonstration at the centenary celebrations on Boxing Day. The Executive Committee was prepared to contribute the necessary funds. Mr D. Thomson explained that the Moeraki Committee was making special arrangements to provide a pool for the swimming races, and he suggested that a number of Otago’s leading swimmer; should bo approached with a view to making the trip. It was decided to advise the Moeraki Committee that the centre would gladly stage a demonstration carnival, and would arrange a suitable programme. The educational officer (Mr D. C. 'Banuatyiie) advised that the number ol school.children’s certificates issued this year constituted a record of 782. made up as follow Merit 139, proficiency 203, learners 440. Mr Banmityne also gave notice of motion to move at the annual meeting—- “ That this centre endorses the proposed scheme of the Sports Protection Association, and that all clubs affiliated to the centre be enrolled as members of the association, and that the annual subscription of 4s per club be levied and paid with affiliation fees.” Advice was received from the New Zealand Council that tho affiliation of the Owaka Amateur Swimming Club had been granted. The executive’s further circular to all centres in reply to a circular issued by the New Zealand Council endeavouring to refute charges made by the Otago Centre in connection with the proposal to change the headquarters from Christchurch was approved.
