QUALITY HORSES

ATTRACTIVE CLYDESDALES ANNUAL PARADE AND SHOW An even more select representation of entire horses than usual was presented at the annual parade and show of Clydesdales held at Tahuna Park to-day. The number of entries was larger than at previous fixtures, and, because last year’s first and second winners in the aged class were again in the ring competing against several new importations. there was increased interest in competition. By the standard it has set in previous years, the Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Society has given breeders in other provinces some incentive to enter their horses _at this show, with the result that entries came not only from Otago, but from Southland and Canterbury. The weather was ideal for a fixture of this nature, but the attendance of the public was not so large as a year ago, although it was considered satisfactory. Prior to, the judging, a parade of all the entries attracted the admiration of the spectators, as it served to display at one time a selection of some of the best quality horses to be found in New Zealand. The judges—Mr Simon Fleming (Crookstpn) and Mr W. J. Taylor (Ashton) —were forced to make a careful study of all entries before making their final selections, due to various special qualities shown by almost every horse. The following were the awards: — FOUR YEARS OLD OR OVER. First prize, £7; second £5, third.£3. Estate of the late Thomas Logan’s (Mossdale) Craigie Crest (by Craigie Winalot--Carseminnock Lily) ... ' 1 G. P. Johnston’s' (Oamaru) Dunmore Superb (Dunmore Supreme —Dunore Daisy) ... 2 Andrew Grant’s (Allandale) Dunlop’s Renown (by Renown—Bonnie Jean) 3 The judges considered that the class was strong. The winner had a great head and neck, and was full of character. He had good legs and was an allround quality horse. The second was also full of character, and displayed attractive carriage. He was small in the joints, and the hock was close to the body. Although the third was last year’s Royal Show winner at Hawke’s Bay he was not shown in bloom to-day. THREE-YEAR-OLDS. First prize £5, second £3, third £1 10s. Andrew Grant’s (Allandale) Allandale Chatham (by Desire —Craigie Ella) .' ... 1 D. S. Brown’s (Dunedin) Verdlea Moonlight (by Scotland’s Superb —May Hazlewood) 2 John Colquhoun’s (Outram) Broomhill Mariner (by Morengo —Abbotsford Tulip) 3 While they considered the class as a whole to be good, the judges remarked that the first and second horses were prominent. The winner was outstanding, and the second was solid and well built. There was more noticeable difference between the second and third placing than between the first two. TWO YEARS OLD. First prize, £5; second, £3; third, ■ , £1 10s. Archibald Wilson’s (Henley) Sunprint (by Roseprint—Bridgebank Sunray) 1 ONE YEAR OLD. First prize, £3; second, £2; third, £l. Estate of the late Thomas Logan’s (Otama), -colt unnamed (by Craigie Crest Mossdale Lady Jean) 1 Ernest Butt’s (Ngapara) Dunmore Select (by Dunmore Superb— Amy Johnston) 2 Estate of the late Thomas Logan’s colt, unnamed (by Craigie Crest —Archaic) 3 This also was quite a good class, said the judges. Although all the entries were in backward condition, there was a lot of outcome in them, and it remained for time to show how they would develop. THE CHAMPION, The winner of the four-year-old class, Craigie Crest, was selected as the champion, the owners receiving the Donald Reid Shield. The same horse won the championship last year, and on that account was not eligible for the Wright, Stephenson Qup, which was accordingly awarded to the reserve champion, Dunmore Superb.
