NATIONAL BROADCASTING CONCERT.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—l wish publicly to express my appreciation to the Broadcasting Service for the delightful fare provided at last night’s concert in the Town Hall. We hear so much lately of carping criticism that perhaps a little genuine praise may not be untimely. I enjoyed the whole programme from start to finish, but I feel enriched by the delightful artistry of Miss Eileen Joyce. It makes one realise what one misses when “ listening-iu ” by not seeing the artist perform. Miss Joyce’s whole personality immediately captivated her audience. She drifted in noiselessly, gracefully, reminding one of a beautiful -flower. From top to too she was the epitome of feminine charm and loveliness, much more youthful looking than I had imagined her to be from her photographs. Her wonderful hands were lovely to watch, every movement being accompanied by grace and ease. In the more forceful passages a wonderful power and virility was there, rather remar table from so frail a form as she possesses.. Considering her world-wide reputation there were too many empty seats. If it had been a .boxing contest much greater public support would have been given. I am afraid the tastes of the public are rather depraved in this respect. Our music-loving public, after all, is small, but most appreciative, as was evidenced by the insistent demands made upon the artist of the evening. She responded very graciously and seemed thoroughly to enjoy playing on the Bluthner Grand. All one’s msthctic sense was thoroughly appeased by something lovely to look at and lovely to hear—an occasion to be remembered for all time.—l am, etc., May Mitchell Buowx. September 22.
