COMMUNISM AND EQUALITY.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —“ ABC ” says all men arc not born free and equal. Perhaps not. At school we sang “ Britannia the pride of the ocean, the homo of the brave and the free,” so I was left to assume that ail else were cowards and slaves. A poet once sang:— Ail men are equal in their_ birth. Heirs of the earth and skies-. All men are equal when that scene Fades from their closing eyes. Your correspondent says some are born slaves to their appetites, etc. All men and women are born alike. The first think they do if they want to live is agitate, and the second is- to satisfy their appetite. The difference comes later on in life. Communists and Socialists usually write a reasonedout letter; anti-Communists rave about running shoes. Not for one minute would I claim that Socialists know everything. For instance, 1 like to study the human race, but have known anti-Communists who just study the next horse race. “ABC ” says Communism stands for “ talking from the few and giving to the many.” Well, Capitalism stands for a much worse system. Witness the wage tax and unemployment levy to subsidise companies already wealthy. I ask “ABC” has the present system always rewarded brains? Milton got £5 for ‘ Paradise Lost ’; that great Scottish Communist, Burns, died in poverty. Did Simpson get a royalty for his discovery of chloroform as an anassthetic? Communism, if it comes in, will do away with . art unions, which your correspondent seems to dislike so much, and real art will be the right of all and not the privilege of the few. Your correspondent talks of honest work For four years I was not allowed to finish my last day, but knocked off work at 2.30 p.m. What about the honest worker (crofters) who were evicted to make room for 100 square mile deer forest in Scotland for a London brewer? If “ABC ” is against Communism will he oppose (communal) compulsory training in defence, not of our country, since land Is private property, but of our financial capitalist system? Or again, will he oppose conscription of men while others are asked to lend their money at interest free of income tax?—l am, e tc. Popopfski. September 22.
