The City Council had before it last night a letter from the Palmerston North branch of the Painters and Decorators’ Union protesting against the council removing Mr C. J. Hudgens', M.P., from the deputy-mayoralty, _and membership of- two committees last week in Mr Hodgens’s absence. The letter asked thq council to reconsider its, decisions-- ' This provoked a lengthy discussion, in which it was alleged that Mr Hodgens, at a public meeting on Saturday, divulged confidential information which had been given before an inquiry being held by the council into departmental affairs. The Mayor moved that, in view of Mr Hodgens’s breach of the council’s Standing Orders, he be suspended for the remainder of the evening sitting. This was carried by sis votes to three. Mr Hodgens took a seat in the public gallery after being asked by the mayor if he proposed to leave the council table. The .letter from the union was received, and no action was taken.
