RANFURLY SHIELD MATCHES.

TO Til EDITOR. Sir, —Next Saturday’s will be the final of our Ranfurly Shield matches for the season. Why not make it a a day by having our famous bugle in attendance? After the popularity of this band in Invercargill I am sure that a march round the grounds would be much appreciated by all spectators, this being a most fitting final to our interesting Rugby season. —I am, etc., Spectator. September 22. , TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —i would like to endorse Mr A. R. Lawry’s sentiments regarding a suitable memento to our footballers who, have so meritoriously held the Ranfurly Shield up to now. Might I suggest that the Rugby Football Union give these stalwarts a gold watch and chain each? It is the least the union can do, as it is through the efforts of our Otago team that we have had such crowds at Carisbrook lately, making the coffers of the Rugby Union swell enormously. I for one think it only right that the Rugby. Union should

treat our boys as I suggest. Personally, I do not think it fitting that the public be called upon to subscribe; no doubt they would do so willingly. Let the union do its part now and show its appreciation.—l am, etc., Fair Plat. September 22, TO THE EDITOR. Sir—lt would be a grand finale if the O.R.P.U could arrange a match between the North Island Maori team and our invincible Otago team, which has given so much pleasure to all who have been privileged to sec (or hear) their wonderful combination. With so much financial gain all round to business folk, including the railways, buses, etc., and also the very handsome profits the union has made this year, I would further suggest that a souvenir be presented to the team and emergencies who made sacrifices to achieve such a record. On all sides one hears nothing but praise and pride of Mr Hore’s men.—l am, etc., Thrilled. September 22.
