PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN

HEARST NEWSPAPERS' CHARGE “COMMUNIST SUPPORT FROM NEW ZEALAND " Press Association —By Telegraph—Copyright WASHINGTON, September 19. The first so-called mud-slinging in the present Presidential campaign occurred with the publication by the Hearst newspapers of a charge of Communist support from New Zealand. “ The real candidate of the unofficial candidates of the Comintern is Roosevelt.” A statement has been issued by the President’s secretary declaring: “The attempt by a certain notorious newspaper owner to make it appear that the President passively accepts support from alien organisations hostile to the American form of Government is conceived in malice and born in political spite. American people will not permit attention to be diverted from the real issues to fake issues, which no patriotic, honourable, decent citizen would purposely inject into American affairs.”
