NOTES ON THE RACING [By St. Claib.] Redolent (289 and 120) and Wexford Bridge (122 and 113) were the best backed for the County Hurdles. The favourite lost several lengths at the start, and Brevity led Wexford Bridge and Havering over the first hurdle. At the half-mile j the favourite ran up, out-jumping Brevity at the next hurdle and lea round the far turn and across the top. Havering joined him at the home turn, and, after jumping the last fence with him, beat. Redolent home by two lengths. Wexford Bridge was six lengths away third, and Brevity was a poor fourth. * * • ♦ Autumn Wind (288 and 331), Fog Peak (149 and 151), Culotte (140 and 207), and Trench Fight (121 and 176) were the best backed for the Novice Stakes. From a bad start halt the field was left, and Culotte led out from Shawlette. Fog Peak, Chief Lama, and Trench Fight. As they raced across the top, Fog Peak ran up to Culotte, and joined her at the straight entrance, where Almira, Thermidor, Shawlette, and Fog Peak were next. At the distance Fog Peak dropped out, and Trench Fight put in a good run, and, cutting down Thermidor in the last 50 yards heat him by nearly two lengths. Culotte was a length third, ' ahd Shawlette was fourth. * * • * Bill B. (357 and 284), Fine Art (340 and 310), and Red Ranger (171 and 210) were the best backed for the Selma Trot. Bill B. failed to go away, losing 20 lengths. Red Ranger at once shot to the front, and was six lengths clear of Reymere entering the back stretch. Going to the far turn Red Ranger was a length in front of Reymere, Aide de Camp, and Fine Art. These four were well clear at the home turn. Then Reymere dropped out, and at the distance Red Ranger, Aide de Camp, and Fine Art were racing abreast. In the last 110 yards Fine Art drew out to win by two lengths from Aide de Camp, who beat Red Ranger by a length. Linklight was fourth. • * « • The Southdown-Cleaner bracket (438) and The Surgeon (343) were best fancied in the small pool on the Ashburton Handicap. Cleaner led Rona Bey and Toute le Monde to the home turn, where The Surgeon moved up, and then Cleaner dropped out, and at the distance Southdown joined in. In a great finish Rona Bey lasted long enough to beat The Surgeon by a short head, with Southdown a neck away third, and Toute le Monde fourth. * • • • Triple Cone and Mob Rule were withdrawn from the John Grigg Stakes for which Card Player (621 and 349) and Bellerive (316 and 282) were the best backed. Bellerive and Heidleberg gave a lot of trouble at the barrier, and from a poor start they got the best of it arid led Guinea_ Fowl and the favourite into the straight. At the distance Guinea Fowl and Card Player headed Bellerive and Heidleberg, but Guinea Fowl, who had the better run of the pair, drew out to beat her stable mate by a good length. Bellerive was a good length away third and Heidelberg a fair fourth. Fairligbt was handy, out Screamer and Pay Up ran badly. • * * * Sir Hugh (456 and 374), Cape Gabo (328 and 364), and Gold Cross (152 and 143) were the best backed in the Ponscroft Hack Handicap. From a perfect start Honour’s Lass and Patricia Holln quickly drew out nearly six lengths clear from Double Gift and Poniard. This was the order rounding the far turn, but racing across the top the leaders were only just clear of Poniard, Double Gift, and Sir Hugh, who Were racing together just in front of Jack Ahoy. As they turned for home at the distance Poniard and Sir Hugh were in charge, but then Jack Ahoy put in a good run and beat Sir Hugh by a length ahd ahalf. Poniard was a length away third, with Polygraph a close fourth. » * » * Grey Honour (498 and 368), Wino (275 and 274), and Great Star (255 and 307) were the best bached for the Spring Handicap. Grey Honour was first out from Wino, but the latter met trouble at the end of the first furlong, and Great Star and Pelmet joined Grey Honour as they raced round for the turn. These three led across the top from Invoice and Gaysome. Invoice and Grey Honour followed Great Star Into the straight with Gaysome close up next. At the distance Grey Honour had joined Great Star, and then Gayaome ran up alongside the favourite, and in a bumping finish the latter beat Grey Honour by a short head. Davolo finished fast in third place two lengths away, with Great Star next, ♦ * * * Renown’s Best (387 and 325), Starwyn (364 and 259), Fine Art (penalised 12yds, 327 and 226), and Fay Rey .(294 and 278). were the best backed for the Rnkaia Trot Handicap. Starwyn was one of several who failed to leave their marks well, and Fay Rey led Boltaire. King’s Drive, Radiant Prince, and Happy Bird through the straight. 3’ay Rey and Boltaire were just racing ahead of Dual and Happy Bird as they rounded the far turn, and, racing across the top, Glorietta moved up fast. She was first into the straight from Fay Rey, King’s Drive, Radiant Prince, Renown’s Best, and Fine Art. At the distance the favourite challenged Glorietta and then Fine Art ran into third place. Glorietta held her advantage to win by a length from Renowns’ Best, and Fine Art was six lengths away third, half a length in front of Radiant Prince. Lottie Guy was next.

AUSTRALIAN TURF ROSEHILL RAGES WIN FOR SILVER RING SHAKESPEARE BEATS TALKING Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright SYDNEY, September 20. The Rosehiil races, as a full-dress rehearsal for the Randwick Spring Meeting, attracted the keenest interest, _ features being the defeat of Talking (who had been regarded in some quarters as Gold Rod’s most formidable rival) by Shakespeare, whom Gold Rod comfortably defeated at Warwick Farm, and Silver Ring’s fine victory in the Hill Stakes. Shakespeare displayed more doggedness than Talking, who led into the straight, while Silver Ring, after racing attractively throughout, wrested victory from the pacemaker, Lough Neagh, who battled on courageously. Sarcnerie was near the lead throughout. Following are the results:— CAMELLIA STAKES, 200sovs. 7f.
