CONCERT AT PORTOBELLO

Under the auspices of the Otago Centre of the Piping and Dancing Association of New Zealand, a successful concert' was held at Portobello on Thursday evening to assist the local school committee. The chair was occupied by Mr Walker, and a large contingent of piping and dancing followers was present from the city in support of Mr Albert Wheeler, president, and the executive. Mr Charles Brown, from Dunedin, made full arrangements regarding the programme and directed proceedings. Unfortunately during the pi'oceedings the lights failed and the concert party had to carry on under groat difficulties. The chairman, in his opening remarks, complimented the association on again assisting the school, and later in the evening took the opportunity to introduce Mr Wheeler, who responded on behalf of the artists. The concert opened with a pipe selection by Mr Angus MacMillan, and was continued by a massed Highland fling. Highland reel, sailor’s hornpipe, Irish reel, Irish jig, waltz clog, Lancashire clog. Misses Margaret MacMillan gave a sword dance and Millie Baxter a tap dance. Miss Joy Gray gave impersonations of picture artists in songs and dances Miss Irene Scott an acrobatic dance, and Misses Gray and Scott a nautical number in song and dance, ‘ The Navy.’ Mr Johnson rendered the song ‘ A Rose in Your Hair,’ and Mr G. M‘Kop was the humorist .of the evening in song and story. Miss Nan .M‘Kco, in addition to being acconij panist, gave the items ‘ The Charge or the Light Brigade ’ and ‘ The Referee, and later, with her father, a sketch. ‘ John Henry and Blossom.’ . Master Bernard Larson gave two recitations. Supper was- dispensed by the ladies, after which a dance followed. Ihe official pipers for the evening were Messrs Angus MacMillan, R. J- Hornal, and J. L. Thomson.
