Auckland nominated 40, Taranaki 5, Hawke’s Bay 18, Wellington 18, Nelson (Westport) 1, Canterbury 8, Otago 20, Southland 2. * ♦ * * There died in the Dunedin Hospital last week in Peter Wetherstone, a pioneer miner who was the discoverer of the Wetherstone goldfield. He was 75 years old, and leaves a widow who is 70 years of age and is in destitute circumstances. He was a sawyer by trade. » * • The funeral of the late Mr I. N. Watt, for many years Resident Magistrate and Sheriff here, took place at the Northern Cemetery-. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Dr Stuart, and among the citizens who attended were Dr Hislop, Mr E. H. Carew (R.M.), Messrs W. D. Stewart (M.H.R.), J. Logan, J. E. Denniston, B. C. Haggitt, Colin M‘K. Gordon, J. M. Callaway, A. Catomore, and A. D. Harvey, * ♦ * • The steamer Coptic, from Plymouth via Hobart, brought 39 passengers for Auckland, 6 for Napier, 46 for Wellington, 32 for Lyttelton, _ and 27 for Dunedin. Five vessels arrived at Port Chalmers during the first two days of the week. As well as the Coptic, the Nettis, from New York, the Westland, from London, the Ganymede, from London, and the Loch Ness, from Glasgow berthed there. • • • « Mr Lance, M.H.R., states that it has been calculated that a pair of rabbits left unmolested would in three years produce 13,718,000, leaving 6,859,000 does to continue tho multiplication. , , , , The Mines Department has refused aid to introduce appliances for the treatment of the refactory ores for gold and silver. *•* • * Sir Thomas Elder has given £IO.OOO towards the establishment of a medical faculty in the Adelaide University. • • • • The Rev. R. J. Porter was inducted as pastor of the Mornington Presbyterian Church in the presence of a large congregation. Those present included the Revs. J. Gibb (Moderator), A. Finlayson (clerk), A. Cameron, W. Campbell, J. Ryley, D. Borrie, and A. C. Gillies. » • • • Altogether, 1,795 teachers hold certificates under the Education Act in this Colony. In addition 88 licenses to teach have been issued. • * * » In the Rugby match, New South Wales-Otago, the latter team won by II points to nil. The scorers for Otago were Millar, Bee; and J. B. Thomson. Wellington defeated the vfsitors by 18 points to nil. The match between Canterbury and New South Wales resulted in a win for the former by 17 points to nil.
