KENNEL NOTES
[By Taip-wacgek.] Tho South Canterbury Club’s show last week was most enjoyable, except for the fact that the judging was undid- prolonged, tho judge not completing his task until late in the afternoon of the second day. There were several reversals, too, that were rather hard to justify, but taken all through Mr Betts did a good job. Best in show was Mr T. Fogg’s Borzoi Boris Romanoff of Leithval, looking very well, this being a surprise decision, as earlier in tho "day Boris went cardless in the sporting dog stakes. Best opposite sex wont to the Dunedin winner, Mr Fraser’s Springlen. Babette, another winner from our recent local show being Mr Liversedge’s cocker Papanui Ruby, which gained the award for best puppy in show, as she did here. Ruby also won the cup given by Dr King, the president, for best sporting dog, the Borzoi, although a sporting dog, being awarded tho Ballantyne Cup for premier dog only. For best opposite sex Mr Fraser gets the Black and White Cup presented by Messrs John Buchanan and Son and the Opihi Cup for best terrier given by Mr F. G. Saville, which he retains, as he won it last year. Another nice cup to come south was a second Black and White given by the same firm for best Scottish or West Highland white terrier, Mr Austen yetting this with his imported Scottie, Heather Harvester. The trophy for best, non-sporting went to Mrs Nees’s collie Bruce of Andrieff, that for toys (the Conn Cup) going to Mrs M'Gibbon’s Peke Nanpin Santa Fe, although strangely enough, Nanpin ran only second in her class, Mrs Ridgen winning with Chuty-Wuh of Montressor, and the dog, Happi Chow, owned by Mrs Angus, getting the special for best Poke. Some very ordinary Poms, were shown, Mrs Wood’s Lady Marigold winning from some half-dozen puppies, and Mrs Ridgen’s Tow Tow getting the special for best of breed. In terriers the Airedale Huntspill Bart was first out; good body, but weak head, he got the special. Some very good smooth fox terriers followed, Mr Fraser winning open dogs with eh. Brownlow Brutus and getting the first three places in bitches again with Babette, Pamela, and Fifine in that order. Only a few wires were entered, and an .unfortunate accident prevented one that had recently been best in show, all breeds, from appearing. This was Mrs Seymour’s By burn Reliance. He fell downstairs at the hotel where he was staying with his owner, and broke his neck. In this breed the Misses Austeqjs Mahaki Smoky won in dogs and G. H. Kernick’s Welwyn Dainty in bitches, G. T. Anderson’s Lochiel Alexis being alone in puppies. In Irish terriers the old champion, Mr R. Vernon’s Richley Rufus, bobbed up again, while Mrs Spence-Clarke’s Garryowen Peggy collected in bitches and Mr L. E. Vernazoni’s Richley Rebel, in a good class of puppies. Some very good Scotties were shown, a large percentage being by ch. Fairways Sensation, looking every inch “ sensation ” stock. Heather Harvester (imp.) won the special, Mr F. E. Duncan’s Glenshee Gill being best opposite sex. Mr J. C. M'Donald’s Angus of Westmere was made best West Highland, with Mr Buckley’s puppy, Lochiel Tiroran, winning the special for best West Highland or Scotch terrier puppy—a good little Highlander this. In Cairn terriers Mrs Brack’s ch. i.xseraoyne Beau Brnramel won the special from the only other entrant, Mr Wylie’s Cumbrae Lou, while Mr F. G. Saville’s Deganwy Rex was the only Sealyliam present. There was nothing outstanding in bulldogs, the bitch Warrior Maid, owned by Mrs A. Macdonnell. being made best of the breed. Mr Brain showed a nice pair of Samoyeds, the bitch, White Princess of the Yukon, getting the trophy, as she did at the same show last year. The collies were a mixed bag, as usual, Mrs Nee getting the decision, with Bruce, over Mrs Jory’s and Miss Grimmett’s Faythe of Glen Avon, the winner in bitches. Only one Old English sheep dog, Good and Gay of Opihi, a very nice puppy, and two Great Danes. The imported bitch, Mrs Butler’s Lady Jane, rightly got the trophy. In Alsations Mr Notman made both his entrants, Jeanette and Galahad of Lafayette, champions, the bitch getting’ the special. Three nice Borzois, all brothers, were shown, Boris getting the decision. Only four English setters were present but real quality was .evident, Dalesford Gay. Prince beating Bramble of’ Beechwood for the special.
The placings in Irish setters met with a considerable amount of disapproval, that sound dog Taid of Trashna going cardless when he could very easily have filled either first or second place. Mr Stan Cooke’s The .Rajah was made best Irish setter once again, with Mr Sculby’s Comelistone Maureen best bitch. In Labrador retrievers Mr R. R. dear’s Eilyer Wagg and Mrs Easton’s Lassie of Glenlossie won the challenges, Wagg getting the special. Mrs Easton also showed what she called a Golden Labrador, but it was a very dark brown in colour and we in New Zealand are not sufficiently conversant with this colour to know whether or not it is correct. From photos in English publications these golden Labs, appear to be a bright yellow and A. Croxton Smith, 0.8. E., in his book ‘ About Our Dogs ’ refers to them as yellow and further states that “ one rarely gets a dark dog from, two yellows and if a black dog is mated to a yellow hitch the colour tends to become lighter, and may be almost or quite white.” Only two whippets were shown, both good, with th.e dog, Real Arrow, the better. Some nice greyhounds wore shown, Mr Reid’s Direct Surprise again collecting all the prizes. The cocker spaniel classes were the biggest and most generally unifo.m in the whole show. In coloured puppy dogs, Dr A. Gordon Couston’s Yarrow White Boy was first, with Papanui Ruby collecting in puppy bitches and incidentally, in open bitches as well. Mr Lightfoot’s lemon and white dog Glendale Lad was best opposite sex coloured cocker. In blacks. I. M. and F. R. Whee’ey’s Derby Dawn won in bitches and Mrs Cook’s Rex of Glasneven in dogs, Rex getting the trophy. Mrs Cooper, of Christchurch, had the pleasure of seeing her springer spaniel, Sandhurst Solitaire, made a champion —there were no springers of the opposite sex. An Australian-bred Irish wolf hound, Tipperary of Killara, was an interesting exhibit, Albeit he was very nervous at the approach of strangers. This dog, just 10 months old, is of immense size and of a light brindle colour. His sire is Slainge of Brabyns (imp.) and dam Sbee’aMi of Kildare, bis breeder being Airs Bruce Reid, of Melbourne, who has imported several brace of these nice dogs, c|n.'nge being the last. In the big stakes classes the terriers numbered 15, Springlen Babotte being first, Huntspill Bart second, and Heather Harvester third, while in tho
Sporting Dog Stakes (16) Papanui Ruby headed them off, Dalesford Gay Prince being second, and The Rajah third, with the greyhound Direct Surprise v.h.c. Gun Dog Stakes (8) saw Dalesford Gay Prince first, The Rajah second, and Taid of Trashna third, the springer, Sandhurst Solitaire, being v.h.c. There were nine entries in the Nonsporting Stakes, White Princess of the Yukon winning (the non-sporting cup winner Bruce of Andrieff was not entered), with Bonnie Jean of Selkirk (collie) second, and the Great Dane, Lady Jane (imp.), third. In this class Faythe of Glenavon, who beat Bonnie Joan in the breed classes, was not placed, an unusual way of doing things, surely. Of the eight entrants in the Toy Stakes, the already beaten Nanpin Santa Fee (Peke.) was put first (another reversal), with Mi-Dah of Winderraor (Peke.) second, and Lady Marigold third. The 1 Grand Puppy Stakes was the biggest class in the show, having 17 entries—Papanui Ruby getting homo From Master King’s Glenkirrie Thrums (Soottie), and G. T. Anderson’s Lochiel Alexis (wire-haired fox terrier). Toy Puppy Stakes (5) Mrs Angus’ Happy Cnow, Mrs Ridgeh’s Chuty Wuh of Montressor and Lady Marigold being placed. There were 14 starters in the Grand Challenge Stakes, Mr T. Fogg’s Boris Romanoff, Mr Fraser’s Springlen Babette, and Mr Crowley’s Huntspill Bart being tho first three. The stud dog class saw six competing, ch. Brownlow Brutus winning from the West Highland Angus of Westmere and the Wellington cocker, Anthony of Haitaitai, belonging to Miss Ruth Paton. The Ladies’ Bracelet drew an entry of 12, Boris Romanoff, Springlen Babette, and Airs Brack’s ch. Rosemoyne Beau Brummel (cairn terrier) being the three placed dogs.
