MANIOTOTO IRRIGATION
EARLY PROSECUTION URGED THE MINISTER FAVOURABLE [Feoit Ode Paeliascestaey Eepoetek.J WELLINGTON, September 17. Mr Semple (Minister of Works) assured a deputation .of Otago member# that he would like to see the Maniototo irrigation scheme proceeded with at an early date, as it would be of national as well as local benefit. This request was put to the Minister by Messrs Bodkin and Campbell, .Dr M'Millan, and the Hon. M. Connelly,the deputation explaining that unemployment was somewhat acute in the district, there- being 600 unemployed registered at Cromwell, while publio works in Central Otago were reaching completion. The importance of the Maniototo scheme in reducing flooding on the Taieri Plain was mentioned, while the benefit to railway revenue, through development, of irrigation was' quoted. ■ Mr Semple, in undertaking to bring the proposal before Cabinet .this week,stated that reports were available from the Departments of Agriculture and Labour, while the Minister of Employment was willing to contribute from the Unemployment Fund so long as th* proportion did not exceed half cost.
