STUDENT HOSTELS
ANOTHER IN DEMAND BELOW RULING COLLEGE CHARGES That there is need of another hostel for University students which would provide accommodation at a lower rate than Selwyn and Knox Colleges was pointed out to the Otago University Council by the Board of Control yesterday afternoon. No doubt the council would have every sympathy with the. provision of further hostel accommodation, provided the means were available, said the Chancellor (Mr W. J. Morrell). That would involve either private benefaction or—what was unlikely in the present circumstances—a grant from the Government. How far any hostel not endowed might be able to give terms substantially lower than the existing residential hostels was doubtful. Mr P. W. Mitchell pointed out that the Knox and Selwyn buildings were both built by benefactions.. “ That is all wo can do with it,” commented Sir James Allen when the Chancellor proposed that the letter should be received.
