LAWN TENNIS UNION
SUCCESSFUL YEAR REVIEWED The annual meeting of the Dunedin Lawn Tennis Union was held on Monday evening, when a large number of delegates were present. In the absence of the president (Dr Borrie) the chair was occupied by Mr H. Perry. Moving the adoption of the annual report and balance sheet, the Chairman congratulated the union on its sound position, referring not only to the financial side, but to the wonderful spirit of sportsmanship that existed throughout the body. “No fewer _ than 20 clubs were affiliated to the union, while 37 teams played in the competition, as compared with 19 clubs and 33 teams the iprevious season. This in itself augured well for the future of the union.” Mr F. Sims also referred to the excellent position in which the union found itself. The report and balance sheet were adopted. GENERAL. The Macandrew Road Club gave notice of the withdrawal of its team from the local competitions as its courts situated in the school grounds were not in a fit state to play on.—Received with regret. Several delegates spoke on the subject of late starting of matches, the matter being left to the Management Committee. It was decided to commence matches on October 17, entries for the various grades to close with the secretary on Monday, October 5, and first grade balls to lie used throughout the season. The Chairman took the opportunity of presenting the secretary, Mr Lcs. Hope, with a fountain pen as a mark of appreciation of the valuable work which he had rendered to the union. Mr Perry referred to the organising abilty and zest shown by Mr Hope in his work on the Dance and Tournament Committee, and trusted that his advice would long be at the disposal of the union. Mr Hope suitably replied. Mr W. Strang (donor of the Strang Trophy), a newly-elected vice-presi-dent, was introduced to the meeting, and spoke on the various ways of raising funds. Mr R. Corkin was. thanked for his work as ladder secretary, and was elected again to that position for the coming season. The election of officers resulted:— President, Dr Borrie; vice-presidents— Superintendent R. H. Price, Deputysuperintendent W. Morrison, Messrs M'Tndoe, F. Sims, W. Strang, Williams, Thomson, M'Kinnon ; chairman of committee, Mr J. Gibson: secretary. Mr Lea. Hone, ‘i-easurer, Mr D. Mason; auditor, Mr • M'Kinnon; publicity officer, Mr R. Osmond ; committee—Messrs R, Facer, F. Laidlaw, G. Warren, F. Sims, A. D. Lindsay, S. Gourley, H. Lamb.
