BURNSIDE STOCK SALES
FAT SHEEP EASE IN VALUE Larger than at the three previous sales, the 'penning of fat sheep at Burnside to-day was representative of some specially good classes, but at the commencement of the sale an allround- drop in values was ■ recorded. Two further spring lambs were forward, but these were only in ordinary condition. They brought 24s and 28s respectively. Heavy cattle barely touched last week’s prices, and medium sorts were cheaper throughout. So far as quality was concerned, the entry of fat cattle was very similar to that sent in last week. The number forward was 259. A few trucks of extra good heavy bullocks, a number of excellent medium weights, and a fairly largo supply of light and unfinished stuff made up a proportion of the yarding, which also included a fair entry of cows and heifers. However, the cows and' heifers were not so numerically represented as at the last sale, and, as usual, the majority were not of the best, while there was a tail end of weedy sorts. From a quiet opening at values slightly easier than before, the sale remained at this level until the last two races were reached, when prices receded about 10s a head. Messrs Hastings. Bros., Stirling, sent in the truck of cattle that commanded the highest price, this being £9 17s 6d. Other consignments from the same district brought from £l7 10s to £lB. The highest price paid for bacon pigs was £5 2s and the lowest £2 18s, making the average value a lb approximately 6]d. Porkers brought from £1 12s to £2 18s, or about 6|d lb. There were 129 fats and 118 stores in the complete yarding. The general quality of the fat sheep forward was specially good. The entry was comprised of some 2,000 head, being inclusive of a big consignment of wethers, some being in the extra class, but a big percentage was light and of the close-woolled type. There were also several trucks of specially fine ewes, with a much smaller entry than usual of light sorts. Hoggets were in good supply. The first pen of shorn wethers sent in this season attracted attention. The sale opened quietly, with prices (from Is to Is 6d a head down on last week’s rates, and, judging by the large entry, it was probable that there would be a further decrease in values before the finish. There was a small entry of realers, and a very keen sale resulted, the best selling from £5 to £6 19s, with others bringing from £2 10s to £4. About 60 head of store cattle made up a mediumsized entry. Included in the penning were some two and three-year-old steers, many being in forward condition. Competition from graziers was very brisk, and a good sale ensued. Prices were fully up to last week’s rates. The best three-year-old steers sold from £9 Is to £lO, and the two-year-olds from £5 10s to £6 15s. Heifers were worth from £2 10s to £5 7s 6d. Poor stuff was seen in the small entry of boners, which brought late rates.
