Members of the legislative Council who travelled north by the second exprbss to-day, en route to Wellington, were the Hon. T. O’Byrne and. tho Hon. M. Connelly. Mr H. S. Gibson, district traffic manager of the Railways Department, left this morning to attend a conference of railway traffic managers at Wellington. Mr P. M'S'kimming was a passenger by the second express this morning. He is bound for Wellington.. Mr F. S. Gray, late staff clerk at the Dunedin Railway Station, who has been transferred to Wellington, travelled north by the second express this morning. Mr D. Hid es, of the Melbourne firm, of Messrs Thomas Hubbuck and Son Ltd., was a passenger for Christchurch by this morning’s early express. The Right Hon. R. B. Bennett,/ the ex-Prime Minister of Canada and now leader of the Opposition in the Canadian Parliament, will arrive at Dunedin by the express tomorrow from Christchurch and will stay at the Grand Hotel. Mr Bennett, who will remain here till Saturday, is accompanied by Mr F. B. Dwyer, of the Internal Affairs Department. Mr A. P. Greenfield, who has been genera! manager of the Timaru Brewery Company Ltd. for the past 10 years, has accepted the position of general manager of the Dunedin Brewerv and Wilson Malt Extract Company Ltd. Dr R. J. M'Giil, of Dunedin, has been appointed house physician to the West End Hospital for Nervous Diseases, Regent’s Park. Prior to taking up his duties on September 1 (says our London correspondent, writing on August 26), ' Dr M‘Gil! is spending ,a , fortnight with relatives in Scotland. Reference to the deaths of Bishop Richards, a patron of the club, and Mr W. "Mr E. H. M'Cormack, librarian of the Hocken Library, has been appointed to the Archives Division of the Department of Internal Affairs. When his resignation was received by the Otago University Council yesterday, the Chancellor (Mr WJ. Morrell) said the , hbranan had done valuable work and shown an interest in tbe institution far beyond that which could have been expected. He was delighted that Mr M'Cormack had received an appointment mere in keeping with his attainments and ability. The council decided that the resignation should take effect from October 31, Mr M'Cormack to be granted leave of absence from October 13. Mr F, R. Meldrum advised tne Otago University Council yesterday that he is not seeking an extension of hia appointment as assistant in the chemistry department beyond January 31 next, as he has been granted tho Michael Hiatt Baker Scholarship. Miss E. Alexander has resigned her post as artist to the bacteriology department at the Medical School. It , was resolved by the council yesterday that the resignation be accepted as from August 31, that Miss Alexander be thanked for her services, and that the best wishes of the University be tendered to her for her future happiness. Regret at the death of Mr G. A‘. Simmers was expressed by the Otago University Council yesterday afternoon. Proposing the motion, Dr James Fitzgerald said Mr Simmers was one of the most brilliant students to pass through the University, and when Dr Shand had relinquished the'chair of mathematics to accept tbe professorship of physics, he had been of great assistance. The name of Simmers had been connected with tho University for many years. Reference to the deaths of two members was made at the meeting of th* Council of the Dunedin Chamber of Commerce last night—Mr Robert Lee and Mr H. K. Wilkinson. Mr Leo was a member of the chamber for over 20 years, and served for three years on the council. He was closely associated with the business community and was held in the highest esteem. Mr Wilkinson was also a member of the chamber for many years and served on the council. Besides being a successful business man. be did much to further every worthy object and took a great interest in the welfare of the youth of the city. He lived a full and useful life, and would be greatly missed. As a mark of respect to the deceased, members stood in silence. _ . . The chairman (Mr C. W. Clark! at last night’s meeting of the Otago Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association, made feeling reference to the death of Mr W. J. Burk, tho well-known old Otago runner, and one-time New Zealand champion. Mr Clark said that the late Mr Burk was the father of Hector Burk, who was one of New Zealand’s greatest ners, and a brother of Mr Albert Burk, who was formerly the centre a starter. A motion of condolence with, the relatives was earned, members standing in silence for a moment. At the monthly meeting of the Grange Cricket Club last evening, Mr A. Galland was given the dmtmction of life membership of the Mr C. S. Chadwick put tho motion forward, acting on a recommendation, from the committee, and it was carried unanimously.
