CRAWLING BETWEEN RAILS
NEARLY RUN DDWN BY EXPRESS OLD MAN’S LOST MEMORY [Per United Press Association.] PALMERSTON N., September 14. Brought to a sudden stop on the Longburn Bridge, the northbound Main Trunk express narrowly missed running over a man who was crawling on his hands and knees between the rails. The man was an inmate of the Old People’s Home at Awapuni who was suffering from loss of memory and had wandered from the institution. When the engine entered on the bridge the driver saw the man between the rails. The brakes were applied promptly and brought the train to a stop a short distance from the man, who was lifted into the engine until the bridge was crossed , and then placed in the guard’s van and brought to Palmerston North. He has been restored to the home.
