FAMOUS YOUNG PIANIST
MISS EILEEN JOYCE The world-famous pianist, Mist Eileen Joyce, who is under engagement to the National Broadcasting Service, will give a recital in the Town, Hall on Monday evening next. Miss Joyce will be making her first puljlio appearance in Dunedin, and the brilliance of her playing should prove a treat to all music lovers. Her big piano solo will be * Symphonic Variations,’ by Cesar Franck, and she will be assisted by the 4YA Orchestra of 40 players, conducted by Gil Dech. Of all the great musicians there are two who stand out particularly—Bach and Cesar Fraiick. Bach was d Saxon, and came of a family, of musicians. Cesar Franck was a Belgian, born nearly 150 years after Bach, and he came of a long line of painters,; Every composer has in his music soma special characteristic which is _ often called his “ style.” By this it is possible to tell his music from that.of anyone else. Franck’s characteristics are broad, sweeping melodies and % great gift for weaving them together, as well as wonderful and often startling modulations; startling because tha changes are nearly always to an unexpected key. Sometimes he changes his key by sliding up a semitone; sometimes he will swing suddenly from major to minor or vice versa. His harmonies are difficult to describe and as difficult to forget when once heard. One other curious point about hit music is his fondness for sharp keys. Miss Joyce will also play ‘ Arabesque ’ (Schumann) and ‘ Ballade in G Minor’ (Chopin). Mr Wilfred Kershaw, bass, will be the vocalist and Mrs Clarice Drake the accompanist. The 4YA Orchestra will be heard playing ‘ Children’s Overture ’ (Quilter), ‘ Tarantelle,’ from ‘ London Every Day Suite’ (Coates); ‘Faust,’ Ballet Musio (Gounod), and ‘ Nell Gwyn Dances,’(German). There will be special concession terms for students and pupils booking in parties of five or mox:e. The box plan/will be opened at Begg’a on Wednesday at 9 a.m., and seats at 3s and 2s may be booked without tax or booking fee.
