PUBLICANS AT GOLF

SOUTH ISLAND TOURNAMENT STORMY WEATHER FOR MORNING ROUND Under most unpleasant conditions, the third annual tournament of the South Island Licensed Victuallers’ Golf Association was held on the St. Clair links to-day. The early starters teed off in a driving rainstorm, and, although the storm moderated, heavy showers and a bitterly cold wind were experienced throughout the morning. The course, though heavy in parts, was in comparatively good order, some of ■ the greens drying quickly , between the showers. The licensed victuallers and the wholesalers are unlucky when it comes" to golf. Last year’s tournament was held on the Templeton course, and a drenching rain continued without a break. Some of the northern visitors came to Dunedin fully piepared for bad weather, and, despite the conditions, few of tho entrants, scratched. The tournament was divided into three sections. Fifteen retailers. 20 wholesalers, and 18 friends took part. The first two events are to bo deckled by two rounds of medal play, while the friends played a medal round this morning and a bogey match this afternoon. Mr John Richardson (Dunedin), who made a clean sweep of the retailers’ trophies at Templeton, is defending the championship, but Mr E. W. Blnnden, last year’s wholesalers’ champion, is an absentee. Of the players engaged in the trade, Mr L. T. MCormack (Dunedin ) is the lowest handicapped, being on a six, while a number arc on the limit. Among those in the friends’ competition is the wrestler, Mr Lofty Blomfield, who was handicapped on a 22 mark. The morning round resulted RETAILERS. J. Richardson, 94—16—78. R. Aitchison, 98—18 —80. J. Hincholiff, 98—18—80. D. C; Jolly, 98—14—84. B. Perry, 115—24—91. H. Phillips, 127—24—103. In the bogey match, D. C. Jolly, R. Aitchison, and J. Hincbcliff were equal, 8 down. WHOLESALERS, L. T.
