Many institutions in Christchurch, have benefited substantially, to the total extent of more than £16,000 under the will of Mrs Abigail E. M. Mickle, widow of Dr A. F. J. Mickle, of New Brighton, who died in February of last There r,; ;> three special bequests. The first is a of £IOO to the District Nursing Association; the second is £I,OOO to St. George’s Hospital to enable deserving persons in reduced circumstances to obtain treatment as patients out of the income from the bequest; and the third provides for £I,OOO for the erection ,of a gateway at the Armagh street entrance at Hagley Park as a memorial to Dr Mickle. • • ... The remainder of the estate is divided among five bodies. One quarter, amounting to approximately £3,500, goes to the South Island Methodist Orphanage and Children’s Home and the same amount goes to the Presbyterian Social Service Association which controls Presbyterian orphanages. St. George’s Hospital also received approximately £3,500 in addition to, and on same trusts, as the special bequest, making a total of £4,500 to the hospital. One eighth, amounting to £1,773, is bequeathed to the Canterbury Hospital Board. Carlterbury University College will also receive a sum of approximately £1,775 to establish a trust fund to bo known as the Dr Mickle student loan fund. For the purpose of assisting deserving students to continue their studies at the college, who, for financial reasons, might be unable to do so. . On his death, Dr Mickle bequeathed £SOO to Otago Medical School to provide a prize fund for students.
