POLICE COURT
SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 12. (Before Mr J. R. Bartholomew, S.M.) HOUSEBREAKING ALLEGED. Henry Edward Hayward (25); a labourer, was charged with, on September 9, breaking and entering the dwelling of John George Adam at Caversham and stealing £5 7s 3d in money, a gold ring, and a gold brooch, of a ,total value of £7 7s 3d. On the application of Chief-detective Young, he was remanded till Thursday next. No application was made for bail. ' ATTEMPTED SUICIDE. An elderly man pleaded guilty to a charge of attempted suicide. Senior-sergeant Packer said accused was highly respected. Following financial worries, he had fired a shot from a revolver into his chest when in his office. On the desk was found a note giving instructions for his cremation. Two live cartridges were found in the revolver on the floor. The accused and his family bore the best of characters in the city. On a son promising to look after his father, and accused assuring the magistrate that ho would not repeat the rash act, the charge was adjourned for six months. Accused’s name was suppressed, and an order was made for the confiscation of the unregistered revolver.
