MARKETING SCHEME
GAMBLING BY U.K. MERCHANTS ELIMINATED [From Our Parliamentary Reporter.] WELLINGTON, September 11. The absence of gambling by United Kingdom merchants in New Zealand dairy produce under the Government’s new marketing scheme was commented on by Mr Eagan (Leader of the Legisiative Council) during the progress of :hc Agricultural Workers Bill. Mr Eagan, said that good progress had been made in connection with marketing. Formerly there was much gambling on the London market iit* New Zealand foodstuffs. Certain sections were in the habit of buying New Zealand produce, sometimes on the high seas, and storing it. They had no association with the retailers, and bought the produce with the object of making Id or 2d profit per pound. Sometimes the product was dumped on the market to the detriment of the Now Zealand dairy farmer. “ That gambling element has now been eliminated,” said Mr Fagan, 11 and-the best clement of the Tooloy Street merchants has rallied to the appeal made by the Government in connection with handling our procj^ce.”
