SENTENCE FOR WHISKY THEFT RIVERSDALE HOTEL ENTERED A sentence of one year’s reformative detention was imposed upon Thomas William Parry, 31 years of age and single, in the Supreme Court this morning for the theft of three cases and seven bottles of whisky from the storeroom of the Riversdalo Railway Hotel on Wednesday of Hast week. Accused, who was not represented by counsel, had nothing to say, and Mr W. D. Taylor, who appeared on behalf of the Crown Prosecutor, handed in the police report without making any comment.. According to the evidence taken in the lower court proceedings at Invercargill, James Kelly, the son of the licensee of the Railway Hotel at Riversdale, locked the door of the storeroom about 5 o’clock on the night of September 1. At 11 o’clock next morning he found tho door shut, but the padlock was broken off. Ho discovered that three cases of whisky and seven bottles were missing. The liquor was valued at £27 10s. Accused was found at Garston with a rented car containing liquor, and when questioned by Constable Thompson lie admitted that it was stolen, but declined to say where he goij it. Later Parry made a statement admitting the theft and stating that he intended to sell the liquor. Accused pleaded guilty and was ordered by His Honour Mr Justice Kennedy to lie detained for reformative purposes for a period of one year.
